The Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll makes grim reading for Republicans with only weeks to go until elections that could see the Democrats regain a majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
According to the survey, Americans - by a margin of 41%-18% - said recent developments had made them less favourable towards continued Republican control of Congress. snip
The numbers indicate that any Republican momentum from last month - when Mr Bush took the political offensive with speeches on Iraq - has petered out.
