OK DU armchair activists.. get of your ass and show your face!
Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 03:16 PM by BREMPRO
BOOTS ON THE GROUND FOLKS!

WORLD CAN'T WAIT protest TOMORROW!

Thursday, OCT 5 in 190 cities across the country.

www.worldcantwait.org

for a protest near you:
http://worldcantwait.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2418&Itemid=232&_event=14

If you believe that the world can't wait until 08 to get rid of the Bush Regime, go the the protest near you and demonstrate to the people of the world that the American people DO NOT SUPPORT THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION!!!

If you are content with the lies, systematic corruption, corporate cronyism, mismanaged "war on terror" that is making us and the world less safe, illegal occupation bombing and killing of civilians in Iraq, TORTURE of detainees, disregard for the constitution and international law, dangerous warmongering, neo-con fanatics, imperial arrogance and lack diplomatic skill, feeding of the military and oil industrial complex, war on truth and science, blurring of separation of church and state, disregard for human rights and dignity, fiscal and moral bankruptcy, privitizing public services for private profit, lack of affordable health care, no responsible energy policy, election fraud, environmental degradation, global warming denying...(do i HAVE TO GO ON??) Then go to work as normal or stay home tomorrow.

IF you are as outraged as I am how our country has been stolen and wrecked, THEN SHOW UP AT THE WORLD CANT WAIT PROTEST.

An overwhelming public outcry and demonstration in the streets is the ONLY thing that the MSM will pay attention to and give legitimacy to the protest, otherwise its just brushed off as "fringe LW radicals" Tell your co-workers, your family, your friends. Show the world we care.

THE WORLD CANT WAIT!!

1. So, if they're sick of the Bush admin, why tell people voting is futile?
I'm skeptical. And not marching.

6. i don't believe that's the message, more that we can't wait for
the election, and that elections have been stolen and manipulated by the media, and are now unreliable, and people need to demonstrate their outrage more visibly in the street, not just the ballot box (with tainted software!).

8. From their FAQ:
Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 03:27 PM by iconoclastic cat
Q: But isn't getting the Democrats elected and getting a majority in Congress the only real way to stop Bush?

A: (snip)Look, go ahead and vote if you think you must. But the question is where are you going to put your resources and energies? Into something that has disappointed you time and again? Something that doesn't even represent your demands and interests? Or into something that you not only agree with, but that carries the only chance now before us to carve out a different road and a different future?(snip)

23. Read the list of supporters, I think you know that is not true.
the way things are going, we need a major shake up. Not everyone in this group agrees, on everything- just like we don't all on DU. BUT- impeachment is something they (I/WE) would welcome.
We need to make it VERY clear that Bush has to go. Tomy Blair wasn't impeached, sometimes leaders to step down based on overwhelming pressure- and bickering and feigning hurt feelings, because of some one else's enthusiasm and remarks trying to inspire , is counter-productive.
Unite on this important goal: The Bush regime has to go!

31. Right. Because John Conyers wants to overthrow the US government.
Members of the U.S. Congress are involved in World Can't Wait. Obviously they want to overthrow the U.S. government. :sarcasm:

24. I think people are taking this go "go ahead and vote " out of context
Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 04:18 PM by BREMPRO
I agree that it sounds like this person representing the protest is discouraging voting, and sends the wrong message about the need to continue voting, but the context of the question is related to your power through voting and the fact is that voting hasn't helped us as citizens gain actual representation in the past few election cycles. Most politicians in DC are tainted an unduly influenced by corporate money and lobbyists- their actual constituents. I think they are trying to emphasize that visible protest is needed when elections can be stolen and manipulated, and even if you get your candidate in, they may be pressured by the powerful lobby money to vote against your interest. Don't you agree the whole system is corrupt? Can't we just protest this corrupt regime, and agree to disagree about the power of vote? I say Vote, post, AND protest!

32. So don't be involved in a movement because they encourage
you to do things other than voting?

Voting is grand-- considerably less grand if you believe the elections are stolen. Something must be done. Their goal is to get the Bush Regime out BEFORE 2008. They think 2008 is too long a stay. I tend to agree.

27. No doubt
Um…not an armchair activist. I have been working my ass off for local candidates and would never think of joining an event which would hurt them. Don’t vote? A handful of votes could make the difference in turning my area blue. If you really want to change things, find a candidate you love and do what they need.

11. "DU armchair activists"? that sounds like a rather broad brush
and as much as I believe in street presence, I did not like the fact that voting is discouraged. It is VERY important.

Oh well, people can do both :-)

17. not intended as an insult to DU'ers, just to get attention of those that
do not go to protests! I know many DUers are active in protests.

and I don't read that voting is discouraged in their literature, but questioned as legitimate in our democracy when most politicians in DC are bought by corporate $$ and the MSmedia is a corporate propaganda machine, and elections can and have been stolen. We all know this here at DU.

are not actively involved in their communities. If you stick around you will find that lots of us are very actively involved and are not "armchair activists." Moreover, it is an exceedingly bad idea to be telling people that it is futile to vote.

Maybe I am missing some nuance in this protest, but it seems easy for many to take away the notion that voting is meaningless. Personally, I think the bigger problem is that people don't vote, not that votes don't count. If we got even a small fraction of the people who don't vote to vote, we would not have the problems with close elections being stolen.

20. It's not presumed about YOU individually silly:) look... Col. Ann Wright
spoke at this event last year, and is again. She is patiotic, brave, brilliant and compassionate. I just heard her in Charlotte, NC .
even the watered down verifiable voting bill did not pass, We are about to blockade/attack Iran.
what more do you want. We have to unite to send a c;ear message. this group addresses many issues that most of US agree are MAJOR problems.
So, oh should we just wait-and whine, and pick a different date???
Seriously, I just keepthinking, it can't get worse and it does.

But don't expect too much reaction from DUers.

One of the things they do best is make lame-ass excuses to stay in the comfort zone of the broken mess they still call democracy rather than getting off their asses and taking risks..

Ooops, did I say that out loud? :hide:

30. Oh c'mon
Of course many people have real reasons why they can't participate in events like this. And I am not sneering at anyone.

But for the people who can do more and still don't, I don't know what else to say. There is a movement growing and it bypasses partisan game-playing. It isn't about the Ds vs the Rs, it is about the people coming together to fight a common enemy and restore our democracy. And it's gonna pass a lot of people by if they don't get in the streets and actually meet the people instead of sitting back and calling them 'sheeple'.
