Jesus Camp, Veggie Tales, and Legislative action promoting Christianity
Kews responding to the Christian right - because if Jews don't speak out, they'll think we don't mind

Featured this week on JewsOnFirst.org

Jesus Camp documentary gives a frightening view across the cultural divide. The scariest movie release of the autumn season is, in fact, a documentary. Jesus Camp takes viewers to the heart of America's culture divide as it profiles three children being groomed to become foot soldiers in "God's army" at a summer camp for charismatic evangelical Christians. Even before its recent opening, the film became controversial. Click here, please.

Christian conservatives claim new NBC kids' show Veggie Tales got raw deal. When NBC edited religious references from a cartoon series, religious right groups protested, one calling the network "anti-Christian." Click here.

Congress nullifies military chaplain restraints. Just before adjourning on September 30th, Congress abruptly rescinded regulations that encouraged chaplains to pray inclusively, but permitted sectarian prayers at mandatory assemblies. The move came after a House-Senate conference removed language from a defense bill that religious right legislators inserted to promote expression of Christianity in the armed forces. Reaction was mixed. Please click here.

House Republicans pass bill denying fees for church-state cases. Before heading home to campaign, House Republicans pleased their "base" by passing a measure that would deny attorney fees to plaintiffs who successfully sue a government for violations of church-state separation. Passage was presented as striking a blow against a "profiteering" ACLU. Please click here.

JewsOnFirst is a new Jewish internet community to support and network with people resisting the Christian right. The "First" in our name is the First Amendment to the Constitution, which begins "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" Jews, in particular, have relied on those few words as the enduring bulwark of our freedom, security and privacy here in the United States.

We encourage you to send us accounts of your work defending the First Amendment for posting on our website. Our email address is catcher@jewsonfirst.org.

We want to help activists network, so you can share expertise. The JewsOnFirst website currently has an up-to-date selection of news reports, including material from right-wing Christian sources. We invite you to visit us at www.JewsOnFirst.org, join our community by signing up for the email list, and help make JewsOnFirst grow by contributing your stories and tax-deductible donations.

1. Thanks for the posting. I've bookmarked your website.
"because if Jews don't speak out, they'll think we don't mind"

And the scary thing is, even if they know you DO mind, they'll still keep on their war path. I'm an athiest, and we must join together to fight these groups.
