'Ban Harry Potter or face more school shootings'
A woman who maintains that the Harry Potter books are an attempt to teach children witchcraft is pushing for the second time to have them banned from school libraries.

Laura Mallory, a mother of four from the Atlanta suburb of Loganville, told a Georgia Board of Education officer that the books by British author J.K. Rowling, sought to indoctrinate children as Wiccans, or practitioners of religious witchcraft.

Referring to the recent rash of deadly assaults at schools, Mallory said books that promote evil - as she claims the Potter ones do - help foster the kind of culture where school shootings happen

1. How do we know that she's not using witchcraft to cause the shootings?
A witch, she's a witch I say!

2. Did the shooter read Harry Potter?
Or is God just complicit in murdering school children because we allow people to read it.

30. For all religions:
If we are right, then everybody else is wrong.
We are right.
Ergo, everybody else it wrong.

Sure, conversion is preferable to killing them.

that. That quote is an example of how the "fringes" of religion operate and smacks of hyperbole.

There are actually some wonderful sayings in the Bible.

34. Oh, I studied the Bible...
And I agree. But institutional religion is a different thing. It has real people with real insecurities and ambitions. If their book is wrong, they may lose their power and all. The other books have to be wrong.

36. there are many decent and moral (in the best sense of the
word) people who attend churches of all types and don't seem to be corrupted by the institution.

Taking anything too literally is a risk in the sense that I assume you are referencing....

What happened to the 1st Amendment with these people? If anything, she is wearing her intolerance on her sleeve.

19. When was the last time a wiccan flipped out
shot up the place? If she wants to make the argument that Harry Potter is creating more wiccans, that's one thing (not that I agree with it), but where the hell is the evidence that wiccans had anything to do with ANY of the school shootings?

I remember seeing this argument a few years ago and one thing that I've noticed is in the HP books, how LITTLE witchcraft and magic is treated like a religion. In the books, those who are in the "magic" world make great effort to keep their life secret from the non-magic people (called Muggles in the book). I wish the fundies would just keep their religion between themselves, and leave the rest of us the hell alone.

that can be weak or powerful.... used for light or dark...

gun being in any of them. If Harry Potter promotes 'evil' then so does her Bible.

32. I only recall one time when a gun was even mentioned
It was in the Prisoner of Azkaban. The wizard newspaper was talking about Muggle police officers having guns, and they explained them as a type of, "metal wand that expels pieces of metal very quickly" or something along those lines.

24. I can make the SAME arguments against her bible
"She added that the books were harmful to children who are unable to differentiate between reality and fantasy."

Check.

"'They're not educationally suitable and have been shown to be harmful to some kids,' Mallory said."

Check.

For this same reason... although Paganism is usually shown as truly dark in the Narnia books.

Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 06:34 PM by muriel_volestrangler
Because the only other Google News story I found on this at first was "Ban Rowling or face more school shootings" in The Spoof. It won't surprise you to find that's satirical. But a revised search showed there were other stories in which this nutcase really said this. Oh well.
