Two Florida Newspapers Defend 2005 Decision Not to Run Stories on Original Foley E-mails, 10/3/2006

From the Associated Press (10/3): "The St. Petersburg Times and the Miami Herald, which had been given copies of the e-mail with the Louisiana boy last year, defended their decisions not to run stories. 'Given the potentially devastating impact that a false suggestion of pedophilia could have on anyone, not to mention a congressman known to be gay, and lacking any corroborating information, we chose not to do a story,' said Tom Fiedler, executive editor of the Herald.

And from an editorial in today's Miami Herald: "Some newspapers -- including this one -- knew of this message as well and did not find it worthy of a news story because it seemed innocuous. Thus, Democratic charges of a 'cover up' of Mr. Foley's activities by the Republican House leadership seem not only premature but crassly political. But the discovery of other, more explicit, messages and confusion over who knew what and when raise questions that require answers -- preferably, under oath and soon.

FL-16: Florida GOP Unanimously Selects state Rep. Joe Negron to Stand As Nominee, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, 10/3/2006

From the South Florida Sun-Sentinel (10/3, Hood and Hollis): "Soft-spoken and fiscally conservative, state Rep. Joe Negron became the Republicans' unanimous choice Monday to stand in for disgraced former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley in a critical congressional race only five weeks from Election Day. ... During the next month, the Stuart attorney will have to get his name and message out to District 16 voters in Palm Beach County and parts of seven others. He'll also have to rebuild his once-flush campaign bank account from scratch. Negron had more than $1 million in reserve after he pulled out of the state attorney general's race in July, but only about $600,000 of it! is eligible for his congressional campaign. It's not yet money in the bank. Federal law requires funds raised for state races to be sent back to donors, who then decide whether to contribute to the federal race. ... Addressing reporters and the 37 members of Florida's Republican Executive Board at Orlando International Airport on Monday, Negron said: 'A vote for Mark Foley is not a vote to re-elect former Representative Mark Foley. Mark Foley's name is a placeholder. I'm asking voters to vote Republican. I'm asking conservative Democrats to vote Republican.' ... Others said Negron's popularity and respect within the halls of Tallahassee give him a fighting chance against Democrat Tim Mahoney, especially in a district that elected a Republican congressman the past six times. 'He's a wonderful candidate with great credentials,' said Sid Dinerstein, chairman of the Republican Party in Palm Beach County. 'He's an upbeat, positive person and would ! represent the voters in that district very well.'"

CT-04: New Poll Shows Rep. Shays Leading Diane Farrell, The Stamford Advocate, 10/3/2006

The Stamford Advocate (10/3, Ginocchio) reports the results of its own poll on the CT-04 race: "An Advocate/Greenwich Time poll shows incumbent U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays has a 4 percent lead over Democratic challenger Diane Farrell among likely voters in the hotly contested 4th Congressional District race. The poll, conducted by the University of Connecticut's Center for Survey Research and Analysis, shows 44 percent of likely voters support Shays while 40 percent support Farrell. ... When those who lean toward a certain candidate are included, Shays leads Farrell by 5 percentage points, 46 percent to 41 percent, with 12 percent undecided. The poll of 753 registered voters was conducted Sept. 25 to Oct.! 1 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points."

CT-02: Newsday Praises Rep. Simmons for Working to Win Funds for Long Island Sound Preservation, Newsday, 10/3/2006

From a Newsday (10/3) editorial: "Even in the too-often hostile environment of the nation's capital, sometimes the right thing can get done, with a dash of bipartisanship and a recognition of common interests. That's how Congress was able to pass the Long Island Sound Stewardship Act, a long-overdue federal commitment to land preservation on the Sound. As a body of water shared by two states, it's a natural for a national investment. On Long Island, the agents of preservation up to now have been primarily Suffolk County, the towns and the state. Now the two co-chairmen of the Congressional Long Island Sound Caucus, Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) and Rep. Rob Simmons, a Connecticut R! epublican, have been working hard to get the federal government more involved. They introduced the bill in 2004, and last week, they got it passed. In the Senate, New York's two Democratic senators, Chuck Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton, co-sponsored legislation along the same lines. Once the House bill passed, Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) helped get it to the Senate floor, where it too passed last week, by unanimous consent. Once President George W. Bush signs it, as we hope he will, the legislation will make available up to $25 million a year for four years to preserve environmentally important land on both sides of the Sound."
