DID FOLEY INVITE PAGES/STAFFERS on MARIANAS JUNKETS???
I cannot get this simple question answered.

We know DeLay was Foley's sugar-daddy who was responsible for keeping Foley in office in 2004 when he was going to resign despite the rumors swirling around him. Washingon Monthly said so in 2004.

We know DeLay was in charge of a patronage and blackmail scheme, known as "the list", to keep closeted gay republican staffers under his thumb. David Brock (former Republican strategist) revealed the existence of "the list" in 2004. Now David Corn of _The Nation_ has a copy.

We know DeLay was the point-person in Congress for protecting the corrupt Marianas Islands territorial government (and associated crime families) from prosecution for money laundering, sweatshop labor and child trafficking.

We know Abramoff and DeLay organized "junkets" to the Marianas for Congressmen, staffers and pages to "convince them" that the Marianas was doing well, among other things.

While there they stayed in a mostly empty hotel owned by aforementioned crime family.

What was Foley's connection to the Marianas junkets?

Didn't he attend them and invite most of the other participants -- Hill staffers, pages, people with no connection to the House Committee on Insular Affairs that oversees the Marianas Islands -- to attend these junkets to a known sex tourism destination dominated by sweatshops and a half-empty casino hotel?

That is what I recall reading here on DU before the Foley scandal broke,
back when he was only allegedly attracted to pages.

Can anyone do more research on this?

The information in this thread is all I could discover:

3. Research on this is hard...

This is a good question to be asking. A connection between the Republican Marianas slavery and sex trade and the Foley scandal would certainly help bring that scandal further to light. Other than Bill Moyers, the Old Media does not seem to want to touch Marianas AT ALL these days.

However, because just about every webpage and blog, even back-dated old articles, have current event adverts on them that list Foley's name, they pollute the search space and it is hard to do effective web searches so it's really a matter of those who have advanced web mining skills picking up the possible link. Don't get upset at DUers for not knowing -- the Abramoff scandal is huge, so other than a few experts, not every association is widely known.

We need our own "Walt Starr of the Velvet Mafiagate". Someone with more computing power to surf the news archives for info on who attended these junkets.

At this point Republicans are reeling. The media smells blood. All we have to do is show a connection between Foley and the junkets -- and figure out who attended them.

13. MADem suggested Foley was using this money to "pay off" House leaders
Just a little tidbit I now remember when you brought this up.

I didn't know the source of the money was Abramoff.

Although the "pay-off" doesn't explain when Foley wanted to resign
(and was clearly drunk & depressed, wt least according to his lawyer)
why Rove and DeLay put strong pressure on Foley to run for re-election
in 2004, in the face of rumors that were surfacing in the Washington Monthly and on blogs.

Blackmail does explain it -- if Foley was being used as bait to lure unsuspecting Congressmen, staffers and future staffers to a hotel on a Marianas islands junket.

Naturally Foley would feel entrapped by such a scheme, since Rove and DeLay knew he was expendable -- although you don't ever really publish blackmail pictures, according to criminologists. That ruins their effectiveness and sheds light on the blackmail operation.

Rove definitely didn't want Foley outed before an election, before he could safely be out of office.

After all, he'd lasted 10 years operating a veritable casting couch for impressionable GOP pages out of his office, and you can bet DeLay knew about it.

So the question becomes, was the Marianas the site of a blackmail operation organized by DeLay, operated by Abramoff's criminal sex trafficker cronies in the Marianas crime family that owned the hotel, in which Foley was being used as bait?

If so, did Foley do the inviting and who else attended?

Eagle Publishing's Carneal is a big GOP donor

From opensecrets.org:

CARNEAL, JEFFREY J MR WASHINGTON,DC 20009 EAGLE PUBLISHING INC./PUBLISHING
* 2/28/2003 $1,000 National Conservative Campaign Fund
* 5/26/2004 $1,000 National Conservative Campaign Fund
* 10/2/2003 $1,000 National Conservative Campaign Fund

CARNEAL, JEFFREY WASHINGTON,DC 20009 EAGLE PUBLISHING INC./PUBLISHER
* 6/16/2003 $500 Foley, Mark

CARNEAL, JEFF WASHINGTON,DC 20009 EAGLE PUBLISHING INC./PUBLISHER
* 4/23/2003 $225 Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund

Foley is a Republican Representative from Florida.

That donation to Foley right around the time he was first being outed as gay really caught my eye, especially coming soon after a donation to the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund. So I googled up Jeffrey Carneal and found this:
http://www.nationalpolicyinstitute.org/pdf/candr.pdf#search=%22%22jeffrey%20carneal%22%20gay%22

Again, times have certainly changed. One of the complaints I had to deal with on a regular basis was from one of the editors who wrote hard-hitting copy about outrageous homosexual news items in blunt language—the sort of reporting that had regularly appeared in Human Events. Winter would make it a point to tone down the rhetoric, replacing “homosexual” and “sodomite” with “gay” in proofing the text. Winter was especially concerned that fagbashing epithets would offend Jeffrey Carneal, the president of Eagle, the parent company of Human Events, who is widely alleged to be homosexual.

A major concern shared by some of the Human Events staff was a perceived need to placate Carneal’s sensitivity to homosexual issues. The editors walked on eggshells in trying to balance the conservative, profamily values of Human Events readers and Carneal’s whispered homosexuality. For the record, Carneal is listed as a donor to the Whitman-Walker Clinic, a “community-based health organization ... established by and for the gay and lesbian community.” According to Federal Election Commission records, he contributed $500 in June 2003 to the reelection campaign of Rep. Mark Foley (R.- FL.), who has refused to answer questions about his alleged gay lifestyle. Foley also received a $500 contribution in June 2003 from the Log Cabin Republicans Political Action Committee, a gay Republican organization, and has received contributions from the Human Rights Campaign PAC, the leading homosexual organization that endorses candidates who support “gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality.”

I don't know if this leads anywhere, but at the very least it suggests that at the same time Foley was denying being gay, he was glad to receive support from the gay GOP community.

Guess who specializes in blackmailing gay people and exploitation of monors? That's right, the mob. The blackmail side of the operation is where the money's at.

Remember that creep who allegedly forged the Air National Guard memos and sent them to CBS?

The guy who was in a swinging sex club with his wife, who had Florida Mob ties?

The guy who engineered the recount riot?

Remember how Abramoff's business partner was murdered in Florida?

Remember who was running crack cocaine into the US in the 1980s to aid the Contras? That's right, Republican mobsters in Florida.

Blackmailing congressmen by hiring pages as staffers, using Foley as bait, is NOTHING to these people.

18. Hmm, perhaps this allegation is untrue and we should retract it?
I am just asking because so far nobody's found any evidence that DeLay brought anyone along on the Marianas junkets for "sex tourism" purposes.

Although "sex tourism" is one of the primary sources of organized crime corruption in the Marianas that DeLay (and Sweeney) was defending against prosecution, owing to Abramoff's efforts to promote and protect the Marianas sanctuary for criminal activities.

I stand by the theory that Foley was being used as a casting couch.

To recruit people into DeLay's patronage scam, a system of power and control in which closeted Republican (and Democratic) staffers were and are being manipulated and blackmailed.

That is the gist of what Brock and other ex-republicans are implying.

If Foley WAS involved in any of DeLay's Marianas junkets, that is significant.

But no evidence of that at present.

So...?

This is how you blackmail Congressional staffers. Set up a casting couch and recruit pages who associated with Foley. David Brock, or his sources, allege there are many staffers who owe their jobs to Foley. If he took them along on junkets that is the easiest way to prove that blackmail was going on.

I grew up in the Marianas, so your question caught my attention.

I can see why you would be curious about the specific individuals invited on the junkets. Strange I couldn't find a guest list of some sort. I saw receipts for expenses, photos of a congressman captioned "on a junket" so a list of who went ought to be easy to find. They don't seem to be trying to conceal their actions.

Sep 20, 2005

Rep. Mark Foley: Tom DeLay's Latest Crony of the Week

Foley Takes Thousands of Dollars in Campaign Cash from DeLay; Puts National Party and DeLay Ahead of Florida Families

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee announced that Florida Congressman Mark Foley (FL-16) is the newest Tom DeLay "Crony of the Week." Foley was named "Crony of the Week" for loyally toeing the party line and always following his ethically challenged leader, Tom DeLay, in Congress. Congressman Foley will be featured for his cronyism for the next seven days on the DCCC's website: Tom DeLay’s House of Scandal (www.houseofscandal.org). Mark Foley plays follow-the-leader, in this case with Republican leader Tom DeLay, on nearly every issue. In fact, Foley is so closely allied with DeLay that he votes with him 89% of the time including dozens of measures that have hurt Florida families. Congressman Foley has also taken thousands of dollars in campaign cash from DeLay – yet another sign that he fights for Tom DeLay and the special interests and not Florida.

Floridians can learn the truth about Mark Foley, by logging on to the DCCC's website, www.dccc.org or www.houseofscandal.org. Here's a glance at what voters in Foley's district will see when they look into his record:

# Mark Foley has taken more than $8,500 from DeLay’s political action committee, ARMPAC .

http://www.dccc.org/news/foley_crony/

It wouldn't surprise me if there isn't some blackmail connection for recruiting young repugs. Explains some of the blind loyalty that they exhibit.

You say: "We know Abramoff and DeLay organized "junkets" to the Marianas for Congressmen, staffers and pages to "convince them" that the Marianas was doing well, among other things."

How exactly do we "know" this. It would be quite unusual for a Page to go on an overseas trip. In fact, I've never heard of such a thing. Can you provide a link? Otherwise, I think its ill advised to make overblown claims that can easily be rebutted.

Edited on Fri Oct-06-06 03:34 PM by Leopolds Ghost
Someone with more computing power and/or access to Lexis-Nexis than I.

I posted all the links on this subject already. DeLay protected Foley from talk of resignation in 2004. DeLay went on numerous junkets to the Marianas islands to defend the criminal enterprises there, including sex trafficking.

And oh yeah, gay ex-Republican David Brock says DeLay was in charge of blackmailing every gay on Capitol hill, that is how he kept them in line. He said this in 2004. Ever hear of the "velvet mafia" or "the list"? Washingon Monthly was discussing this, and how it related to Foley's behsavior, two years ago.

Foley was part of a patronage scam designed to assemble dossiers on people which DELAY KEPT. NUMEROUS current House senior staffers are FORMER PAGES who consorted with, or were exploited by Foley. Are you saying that this is a coincidence?

We know that Foley took staffers on junkets. Even Rush is rumored to have gone on a sex tour in the Carribbean. See link in my original post for more.

Take off your pink tutu and help us do some RESEARCH on this, if you have the computing power to do so! Otherwise you are just defensively covering for them for fear of Dems being slimed, like Pelosi (who said Dems didn't want to attack too hard on this issue until they found out if any Dems were involved.)

Again, see the link in my original post in this thread.

30. O'Donnell, Cox outs "Velvet Mafia" blackmail network
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2323080

O'DONNELL: But Joe, this is very, very important piece of the story. This is going to be part of where we track the information about how it flowed. And it' going to be a very important question on the staff level, not necessarily on the elected level. But people are going—Republican base is going to be shocked

SCARBOROUGH: And I...

O‘DONNELL: ...when they discover within a week where the closetted gay men are positioned in this story who have not yet been revealed.

SCARBOROUGH: And Ana, you were talking about--earlier with me--we were talking about the fact that the Republican Party has some issues on the gay issue.

ANA MARIE COX, WASHINGTON EDITOR, TIME.COM: They do. (The Republicans) have a kind of split personality about it. On the one hand, they have a base who is largely, not to be put too fine point on it, pretty homophobic, and they really count on that. They got out the vote by campaigning against gay marriage in the past few years.

And on the other hand, they have a somewhat more sophisticated, somewhat more worldly, let's say, elected leadership who not only know gay people but know gay Republicans and work with gay Republicans. And Lawrence is right. At the staff level, the House has quite a few gay people. And those are the people—are the "Velvet Mafia" of the House, of the Hill, and those are the people that are counted on to keep the other closeted members of Congress and staff members in line, and that is how they tried to deal with Foley this time around.
. . .

SCARBOROUGH: Lawrence O'Donnell, I think the Republican Party is doomed. I think even if they throw Denny Hastert overboard, that does absolutely nothing to save him. What do you say?

O'DONNELL: I agree with you, Joe. This is one of those things where there‘s no good political choice to make. The story is completely out of control.

I just want to stress, today it moved to the staff level. It's going to stay now at the staff level for the next news cycle. This is now a very, very important staff credibility issue. The battle between Kirk Fordham and Scott Palmer, who, as reported in the initial report tonight on your show--Scott Palmer, chief of staff for Denny Hastert, who is denying, very specifically denying that he was ever told that there was a problem with Foley by Fordham. Now, that is a crucial--those two guys are going to become the stars of this story over the next couple of days, and it's going to make the story something different.

33. There were a lot of junkets
In 1997 the Marianas taxpayers picked up the tab for 88 week-long junkets at a reported $5,500 per traveler. Seven members of the House, five wives, one child, and 75 aides crossed nine time zones to find facts while golfing, snorkeling, and deepening their tans. Because the Marianas were U.S. territory, and its government was paying for the vacations, these paragons of government ethics did not have to disclose the junkets on their official travel reports.

If you had a family, wouldn't you take them on a trip to a tropical "paradise", sweatshops and child prostitutes in the streets be damned?

Unless you were going there to fool around with the aides in a location where the landlords were used to such behavior?

The fact that only seven Congressmen were involved minimizes the collateral fallout,

so if Foley was one of the seven, this could be very significant.

39. Should one of us contact Dubose of the Observer and find out for sure?
Whether Foley was one of the seven who took large numbers of staffers
on junkets to the Marianas?

It seems he would know... bump.

40. One last bump... does anyone else know/care about this issue?

Surely we don't have to contact Dubose to find out exactly who went on the junkets. The Texsas Observer quote was fairly specific in indicating the number of congressmen (seven) and staffers (seventy-five).

41. Researchers needed. Bump... so many DUers do not understand blackmail
They keep repeating talking points about how horrible it is for gay Republicans on the hill that Rove intentionally outed them. That is ridiculous. The reality is that dems do not want the scheme outed because it makes all gay hill staffers look bad, since it would reveal that hill staffers (gay and straight) are mostly upper-middle class snots who are all in bed with one another (literally and figuratively).

That is why it was so easy for Rove and DeLay to dig up dirt on them.

Once you dig up dirt on your allies, you do not release that information to the public!!!

You use it against him in private. You withold the information as long as he stays in line -- and they all stay in line for crucial votes, Republicans and Democrats.

As Newt told DeLay, the staffers are key. Dig up dirt on the moderate Republican staffers, he told DeLay in 1995. That is when they first started exploiting Foley.

So I ask again... Did Foley go on any of DeLay's Marianas junkets and if so, who with?

42. Consider this angle....
Foley SHOULD have gone to the Mariana Islands. As one of the key legislators supposedly overseeing the protection of children, he was in a position of power to stop the child sex slave industry there. The Adam Walsh Child Protection Act of 2006 includes the Mariana Islands insofar as enforcement is concerned. The fact that we can't find one single trip Foley made to the Mariana Islands to investigate the reports of the child sex slave industry should be a huge red flag. Why DIDN'T he go there?
