Lou Dobbs on the Today Show suggests everyone register Independant
Edited on Fri Oct-06-06 10:23 AM by helderheid
Saying that both parties serve the same corporate masters and that everyone registering Independent would send a strong message to both parties.

1. Except that we still have to pick a D or R in most races so
not much of a message in the end.

Nic try tho, Lou.

14. Well I'm a Green who mostly votes for Ds, and I'm still not sure that
it's sent much of a message.

3. first off in some states...
you don't register...in Texas you pick a party's primary and vote in it and there's no "independent" primary. Second I'm not putting myself into the same category as Kinky Friedman. And finally, I'm a Democrat and proud of it. Lou Dobbs can kiss my ass.

5. Wouldn't the message be "pick your own candidates"
It would only be effective in a district where there was a viable independent or third party candidate - in which case it might scare the 2 main parties into action.

6. I hate it when people say there is no difference between (R) & (D)
There is a huge ideaological difference and the Dems need to scream it out at the top of their lungs.

20. And yet when it really matters, there are the Dems voting right alongside.
Patriot Act, Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, wiretapping, torturing, etc. Granted not all of them all of the time...

11. Yeah he really pushes that meme out there...

I like a good number of the things he sheds light on, but he pushes some incredibly regressive ideas in his subtext.

And he's a chicken and won't cover the Marianas, even though the story is a perfect fit for his show. My guess is he just cannot bring himself to admit that the Republican party is beyond all hopes of economical repair and is destined for the trash heap. He's still fearing Democrats and hoping that Republicans can be cleaned up -- sorry, Lou, that's like "cleaning up" a dog turd: there's nothing left afterwards.

9. The thing that bothers me
about registering as an Independent is that it sort of says that you would consider voting either way. No way would I pull the lever for an R, not even for dog catcher.

Broken Record
Lou Dobbs' daily 'Broken Borders' CNN segment has focused on immigration for years.

But there's one issue Dobbs just won't take on.

By Heidi Beirich and Mark Potok

.... For more than two years now, Dobbs has served up a populist approach to immigration on nightly segments of his newscast entitled "Broken Borders." He has relentlessly covered the issue, although hardly from a traditional news perspective -- Dobbs favors clamping down on illegal immigration, and his "reporting" never fails to make that clear. He has covered the same issues, and the same anti-immigration leaders, time after time after time. In recent months, Dobbs has run countless upbeat reports on the "citizen border patrols" that have sprung up around the country since last April's Minuteman Project, a paramilitary effort to seal the Arizona border.

But there's one thing Lou Dobbs won't do. No matter what others report about the movement, Dobbs has failed to present mounting and persistent evidence of anti-Hispanic racism in anti-immigration groups and citizen border patrols. ....

12. Poor Lou.
He is like the others--a handful of old conservatives who found their party hijacked but realized it too late. He should have realized this during the Reagan years.

15. Register Independent in Oklahoma...
and you've locked yourself out of the primaries. So what good does that accomplish? I may have my problems with the Democratic Party leadership, but Democrats remain our best hope for the future. Yellow Dog here!

17. I just can't do that.
In Texas, there is no registration by party, so not independent either.

and start fighting corporations' influence in politics

It's like putting a sticker on your car and thinking that means you "support the troops". Did you fight for any legislation that supports their families if they die? Did you fight for extra/extended benefits? NO. You simply bought a 1.99 sticker and slapped it on your car's backside. That doesn't support anyone but sticker manufacturers.
