American people are SICK of Karl Rove type propaganda and GOP corruption
I think the people in general have MATURED and are ready for a stand for TRUTH.

Karl Rove type propaganda machines are PRE Katrina and OLD THINKING. I think Americans are feeling that life is now too short for accomodating those tactics and that HONESTY and COMPETENCE are what they want from the next generation of leaders.

Democrats need to emphasize that the old way of leading through targeted propagnda campaigns is a DYING STRATEGY that has only hurt and divided this nation.

And that the next generation of leaders must face the people of this country with HONEST policies and HONEST leadership.

2. I heard the night before last
Edited on Fri Oct-06-06 10:27 AM by waiting for hope
on NPR a great breakdown on the Rove/Bush strategy and how it's failing...

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6195034

Journalists Mark Halperin and John Harris have collaborated on a new book, The Way to Win: Taking the White House in 2008. Halperin is the political director of ABC News and creator of "The Note," its online tipsheet. Harris is the national political editor of The Washington Post. They write that the United States is "on the brink of what promises to be one of the most intensely fought and consequential presidential elections in its history."

I wish they would post the text of the conversation - don't really want to buy a transcript, but listen to the above when you get a chance, it was really enlightening.

5. Halperin and Harris want a dirty mudslinging 2008 - I think that's OLD
with the American people and its fighting the LAST CAMPAIGN with Rove's old rules.

But why do it when the American people are proving they are SICK OF IT? Why do it when postKatrina America is screaming for HONESTY and COMPETENCE?

There is so much mud attached to the Rovian Republicans they are sinking under its weight.

Democrats should emphasize SUNSHINE and CLEAN Government - an OPEN GOVERNMENT platform where the corrupt are held accountable.

7. I think proving the
American people are sick of it may be a hard sell when mostly all the ads right now are negative - coming from the left and the right. One of them (Halperin or Harris) said toward the end of the show that the Rove/Bush strategy is currently not proving to be effective because the opinion is right now that things in this country are going so poorly. As long as the Loyalist to Bush Repugs are in positions of power to carry out the message, we will continue to see the shit slinging - and I agree with you about Dems emphasizing a clean government but at the moment, they will have to continue because of the swift boating.

8. You mean the IMPEACHMENTING....this has been going on since impeachment
and is the reason why GOP bought up control of most broadcast media in the 80s and 90s.

Gore, Rather, the Dixie Chicks, and Kerry were just more of that whole cottage industry of smearing Democrats or media figures that sprung up against Clinton.

3. I agree, but its kind of funny
coming from someone who attacks the last President who had a policy of openess and honesty. Clinton never lied to the people about his policies and what he expected them to do. He also listened to all sides which is the only way to achieve what you are suggesting.

4. That was ONE side of Clinton and one I supported. The other side who
closed off or downplayed important issues that Americans needed to understand I disagree with VIGOROUSLY.

6. Its ok to disagree.
But he stuck to the priorities he campaigned on. Hard to fault him for that, credibly anyway.

14. I just can't let that go by without comment
Clinton's first big push was NAFTA. He pulled out all the stops on that and spent considerable political capital--so much, that he didn't bother to put in any guarantees about labor or environment--as he had promised while campaigning. I was frankly shocked at the energy he put into passing this.

I thought his first priority would be health care.

19. not really
NAFTA was a bipartisan effort and Clinton was and is a fiscal moderate. It pissed off some folks on the left but it didn't use up political capital in the normal sense as in not being able to get cooperation on other issues, maybe you can be more specific if you disagree.

Healthcare was always regarded as a more complex and difficult issue to solve. I don't remember any specific campaign promises on National Healthcare in 92 campaign. Vague stuff is all.

I don't want to hijack this thread with a discussion of NAFTA. Feel free to start one if you want to.

23. Well, as I remember it, during the campaign he was absolutely
adamant that no trade agreement would be passed without guarantees for labor and environment. Instead of vetoing an agreement that lacked these guarantees, he rammed it through.

And, no, I don't want to hijack the thread, but I think your statement about him following through with his campaign priorities is misleading.

17. Well, I do think...
...those of us who have a brain and use it ~~ i.e., liberals ~~ have been sick of this bullshit for a long time and are troubled as hell about it, too. However, I do believe that the Freeper "moran" mentality has not even begun to see through this crap. From some of the shit seen on Free Republic and coming out of the mouths of the RW nutcase media whores, I do believe that there are those who are spinning and there are those who are buy the RW shit that is being put out about Foley.

I am thinking that there are some who are soooooo saturated with the Kool Aid, that they are beyond hope. Unfortunately, their King ~~ George II ~~ got into the WH because of them.

Edited on Fri Oct-06-06 12:44 PM by blm
They are of the same mentality that supported a King George and his power over the idea of a democratic nation guided by a people's Constitution.

Look how ready they always are to amend the constitution or allow Bush the means to circumvent the constitution at his own determination. That is SICK.

25. I don't koow if the issue is "want"...
...to appeal to them. I don't think we CAN appeal to them. These are the same assholes who STILL think that the WMD are in Syria...and that Saddam and 9-11 are connected.

I would LOVE to set these morans straight, but I don't think all of the efforts in the world would put a correct fact in their minds.

But, yeah, if there is now a majority with us who are clear thinking ~~ then that is about the best we can hope for in starting to set things right. Bush has done soooooooo much damage to this nation, I don't know if things will EVER get back on track ~~ or at least it will take years. Hopefully, the majority has seen through him and his ilk.

I had a discussion not long ago with one of these assholes ~~ who I met at a friend's party ~~ and I just sat there with my mouth open as he spouted the Syria-WMD and 911-Saddam bullshit. The guy seemed normal until he opened his mouth and I found in a few moments of conversation with him, that there was NO WAY I could ever set him straight. When he went on to "praise" King George, Rush and Drudge, I exused myself and avoided him the rest of the evening. I was inches away from throwing up on him and figured I could not insult the hostess that way.
