Are you satisfied that a sex scandal will apparently bring down the GOP?

I'm satisfied by the overall result as I'm sure we all are, but not at all satisfied by the means. IMO Iraq and Abramoff should have taken out the GOP long before 2004. I'm afraid the GOP might be able to go into semi-hibernation until 2008 and then blame everything on JUST the actions of a "few bad apples" closely associated with the Foley scandal.

I don't know that this will.

Republicans will just buy bumperstickers that say, "So glad I voted for Bush! Thank you for raping my child!"

This is not just a sex scandal. Its the coverup of a sex scandal to keep power. It strikes at the heart of one their main sources of power the Rw Christian Conservative base that thought they were doing this for the good of the country.

I'm guessing the young Republicans are already planning for their comeback in 08 and coming up with slogans like, "We're not like those sexual deviants Mark Foley and Bill Clinton, WE have morals!". See how easy that is? They're going to use the sex scandal to nullify all the other scandals. I'm not sure how we can stop it.

reduces the number of people who will fall for it. How much remains to be seen of course. Sooner or later the hypocrisy will be seen by enough people. The fallacy of using Government to spread religion will become all too evident. THe Pastors will change direction.

This exposes the absolute hypocrisy of being teh party of "values." Of course I mean "values" in the James Dobson family values context....nobody with true values overall bombs innocent people without mercy...or gets involved with the hyper-corrupt schemes of Washington that you would expect to be in a Grisham novel...So the ship will go down based on 1/3 of their core supposed principles - the family values thing. Sure, their crookedness goes way beyond that in so many countless and deplorable ways that we know about - never mind the parts we do not know about :scared:. They should all be in Guantanamo for the rest of their lives sharing cells with the people already there. I am sure they will all get along just fine, but I digress...

For the most part, Republicans are pounding Foley just as hard as, if not harder than, Democrats. Most people I've talked to see Foley as a freak, not as an integral part of the Republican machine.

what is happening in Iraq. The photos are not making it to the presses - the American Soldiers' coffins are not allowed to be photographed....people are way more influenced by visuals....that is being supressed. If people really saw the horrors of war, they would be ummmmm.....horrified!

When people read accounts of the Civil War, it was one thing, but the American public was absolutely shocked when they saw some of the first photographs ever taken of a war - the dead bodies everywhere mangled and dismembered...thrown into mass graves etc...that woke the people up to how horrible war is....that is being supressed in a big way now.

Can you imagine the mainstream newspapers and news shows publishing vivid pictures of the dead and dismembered so that people know what war is all about? No way...it is covered up....and people will merely hear about it - not the same effect at all and much easier for people to brush off with a "Well, isn't that terrible" as they go back to doing their nails or watching a football game. This is not because such people are bad and have no feeling for others - I think it is because the human mind has a hard time conceiving of how horrible war really is. I know that I never conceived of how bad it could really be until I saw blunt photos of how bad war really is - I never imagined it that way....It is 1000000 times worse than what it seems to be like in the movies...that is for sure!

but still the oversight hastart showed over the page program is a metaphor for the type of oversight he's shown elsewhere (like say on Iraq) and I think that is what we should be saying.

No morals, no values - just power, so they can climb down off their high-horses and look us directly in the eyes - or get the hell out of Washington!

We've gone down this path and fought this battle so many times before, apparently to no purpose whatsoever.

(I cannot and will not call them the GOP = "Grand Old Party") but I want them brought down hard and long-term, not just through the November elections.

I want a wipe-out that tarnishes not only Bush, Hastert and Foley, but Republican leadership across the board through the 2008 elections and beyond.

A sex scandal won't do it...but :shrug: it's a start.
