Would whatever's on Foley's computer bring the GOP completely down?
Or rather what was on his computer considering the amount of time he's had to do nice clean up before any real investigation commences. It makes you wonder whether the GOP gave him a head start on this considering nothing gets people's interest more than the visuals...

1. His home computers should show all
The pics have to be out there. He's talked too much about sending pics of the sizes of "organs" not to have some show up.

2. If he's using Windows
He's cooked. Deleting files does not delete the information. Any competent hacker could reclaim any recently deleted files from most any computer. Even if somebody tried to obliterate the files by overwriting the reclaimed disk space there are specialists who make their careers on reclaiming such information.

If such computers are supoenaed they could use these techniques to reclaim any information regardless of any likely attempts to delete files.

5. not to mention the computers of the pages...
Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 04:40 AM by progdonkey
I wonder how many messages he may have sent to these pages, which then got deleted from the pages' computers but not overwritten. (After all, they weren't trying to cover anything up, just deleting e-mails they didn't want.)

24. I was wondering about this
I have an old computer to take to recycling and thought I would remove the hard drive first for protection. Is that enough?

25. thanx upi402
that's a high compliment...

Humor like Stephanie's, Stewart & Colbert, and here at DU --is about the only way I've been able to get through this surrealist nightmare with something resembling sanity. At least I think I'm still sane. Except now when I walk my dog we always keep an eye out for Osama. Yeah I'd love to be a writer of comic lines for somebody else to use...:)

10. Have they even confiscated the computers yet?
I cannot remember reading that they have. I did hear his lawyer say that they have been asked not to tamper or delete anything on the computer and I am sure that they haven't. :sarcasm:

11. Oh, there's stuff left on Foley's comp(s)
The man was using AOL. No offense to AOL users but that usually implies a certain lack of savvy, PC-wise. Besides, AOL would be more than happy to turn over their server-side logs of any IMs eminating from Foley's AOL account. They've done it before.

20. Not necessarily. You can still use AOL's IM software without
being an AOL user.

I can't stand AOL and would never use them as a web browser, but I still have AIM.

22. This is true
however, the emails came from Foley's AOL account. See the original ABC story for verification. As for the IM software, it's likely it was AIM but it could have been Yahoo or MSN...this we don't know for positive.

13. He'll definitely wipe all his porn.
My hope is that, in the frenzy of removing all the gay sex pics, he leaves a bill of sale from a Columbian drug lord for the following:

One hundred and twenty (120) boys aged 8-14 years, for use as party favors at the 2004 Republican Convention in New York. Disposable.

16. Every Site You Ever Visited Is Registered On Your Hard Drive
But some information can be written over...

But if a person incriminating information ob your hard drive it's almost impossible to erase without destroying the hard drive.

If Foley tampered with his computer it will most likwly be discovered.

17. Depends on your browser and operating system.
I use Linux with Firefox and Epiphany and only accept cookies if I want to use the features of sites that require them (like DU and other forums). Thus, my web history for sites whose cookies I don't allow only goes back about 20 days, unless you want to scan for traces of those sites in the Firefox cache, and that data has been written over so many times it'll be difficult.

But it is true that forensic analysis of hard drives can easily turn up traces of "deleted" files, even ones that have been written over. Data destruction utilities write garbage over the original data 3 or 4 times to ensure that it's wiped out. Something tells me Foley isn't computer-savvy enough to know this.

no other explanation for the repuke FBI's lack of investigation.

The FBI has become utterly worthless except as a political tool of the repukes.

If anyone wants an exciting career in law enforcement in America, they should immediately go to work for the Democratic Party.

19. No - because there are still enough idiots who only get their
"news" from Faux or Rush or Hannity's talk show who would die before voting for an "evil, baby-killing" Dem.

Apparently, it's OK to fuck babies - just not to abort a mass of cells.

21. This Could Be The REAL Cover-Up
Foley must have gotten a head's up by ABC they were going to do a story. My bets place that sometime on Thursday night...when the story first ran over the wires and the first postings I saw about it here. According to the "timeline", Foley's resignation wasn't announced until sometime on Friday evening...almost 24 hours after the story broke...and 12 hours or so after the explicit IMs were released. That's an eternity in wiping a computer clean.

A couple point here. First...we're not sure he was IM'ing on a Capitol Hill puter...we could have had his own laptop...or, someone suggested to me...that he has a PDA or Blackberry and was using that. While they could lock down his office machines...if this stuff was being done on a personal machine, it's gonna take some digging to first find out about such machines and then to see if they still exist.

IRC, the first warrants in this case didn't come out until the middle of last week...so that adds even more time for all the stuff being dumped. Several years ago, an acquaintance was nailed on sex with a minor...what nailed him were the pictures in his machine which enabled the prosecutor to match up his involvement with this young girl (when they found her picture on his machine)...and he later bitched that he should have kept the pics on his Palm Pilot and he would have never been convicted.

Now Foley was asking for pictures...some machine has to have them. I only hope the Hastert gang tried to wipe the main Capitol Hill puters clean, cause that WILL show up in an audit...and we could really have some fun.
