A clue to Foley cover-up?

I have been wondering for a week why the reich wing would cover up such a foul scandal. What on earth would be worth risking the safety of underage pages? Other than evil minions covering up their own stench, I could not understand. Then this morning I read this, a possible clue, and another reason to throw all the bums out:

When told about the sex antics of flamed out GOP star Mark Foley, a flushed and indignant President Bush professed shock and disgust to reporters in Stockton, California. Bush's shock and disgust was undoubtedly heartfelt given the magnitude of the sleaze and the mortal election year danger it posed to House Republican leadership, and Republican candidates.

But Bush was anything but indignant six years ago at Foley, and for good reason. Foley played a pivotal role in sealing Bush's much-disputed snatch of the White House. He helped shove thousands of dubious votes into the Bush column in his home district of Palm Beach County, Florida. And he enraged thousands of Democratic leaning black, Jewish, and elderly voters by passionately and publicly defending the manipulation, exclusion, and possible outright fraud of their votes.

A week after the election, with the air thick with lawsuits, court challenges, and accusations by Democrats of voter fraud, Foley took to the airwaves and delivered the Republicans weekly radio address. He flatly demanded that wrangling over the vote count should end. By then national attention and court challenges, focused to the faulty ballot design and the vote count in Palm Beach County.

During the days the debate raged over the vote, Foley launched a one-man spin crusade against the Democrats. He blamed outside agitators and "political operatives" for interfering in Florida's vote. He claimed that any suggestion that the vote was unfair insulted his constituents. He downplayed the significance of the vote for Buchanan, and at the same time defended it by implying that there was a stealth core of Reform Party backers in the County.

Like Bolton, he played a huge role in the BFEE's power grab (and some call a coup) in 2000.

Do not let the reich wing blur the debate. They don't want any investigation into Foley. Period.

there's definitely more than meets the eye going on here. Hopefully the whole sordid story will unravel before election day and the Republicans will be buried beneath their own hypocrisy.

You're right ... suddenly the air clears a LOT and the big effort to keep Foley's serial predation under wraps as long as possible makes more sense than ever -- to a Repuke mind.

ALL of us can now see why it was so important to them to keep his blatant sexual offenses under the rug, but in the end they just made too big a lump to ignore!

I really hope Foley cracks under the strain and spills the beans about his past non-sexual sins as well. It's not too hard to imagine that it might happen ... if he gets to feeling resentful of the way he is now shunned and denied by his former "gentlemen" colleagues, Foley MIGHT just decide to remind them -- and inform everyone -- of his, er, ah, "contributions" to their cause during the 2000 elections....

Role in Florida recount in 2000

During the 2000 election, Sweeney helped to stop the third recount in Miami, possibly leading to his nickname from President Bush, "Congressman Kickass." He led the charge in November 2000 on the Miami-Dade elections commissioners by urging the Bush supporters to "shut it down!"; they then banged on the election commission's doors and the commissioners stopped the third recount. Sweeney used the words "thugs" to describe the Florida officials involved in the recount. He said his intent was only to stop the canvassing board's withdrawal from public view., and that his actions were "completely and absolutely legitimate."

He's up against Kirsten Gillibrand in November:

TERENCE SMITH: Congressman Foley, if it does turn up new information, what's wrong with that?

REP. MARK FOLEY: Well, we don't like it simply because there are no standards. In fact, he just said, "We're not certain of the way we're going to conduct this or what the outcome will be." I think by now, these ballots are somewhat tainted. They've been shipped back and forth, they've been examined by people in Palm Beach County and Broward. I'm very, very concerned that this could attempt to undermine the legitimacy of this President. Mr. Gore conceded, the election's over. I think it's time, after watching the opening of this show, where members of Congress are joining together and working on education policies, that we focus on moving ahead, not backwards.

So I question: What is going to be achieved by this? If the Miami Herald and other news sources were looking at the machines, looking at the problems the machines created, I may be thinking differently now. But what I hear is we're sitting in a warehouse with reporters, we do not know the political affiliation of those reporters. As I understand it, the Miami Herald and most organizations who are doing the recounting endorsed Mr. Gore, so not suggesting a bias, but clearly they certainly an had an interest in the outcome by suggesting who may make a better president. And now, six weeks later, we're going to start going over these ballots once again and creating an element of doubt in the public's mind.

Yes, there probably is some doubt today, and I regret that. I regret the confusion of Palm Beach County's butterfly ballot. I regret some of the allegations being lodged against our communities. But we're not counting 67 counties, we're not asking for recounts apparently where there was a higher percentage of undervotes in Chicago and in Illinois. There was a higher percentage in Georgia. Nobody's asking for that because they say, "Oh, well, we won that by large majorities." Well, the fact remains, by constantly dredging up and looking to see if you have a better standard than the Supreme Court could discern, then I think you've created a problem for this president.

There is slimy infamous uncontestedd proof that Republican operatives were brought to Florida from DeLay's office and other offices in Washington to pretend that they were Dade voters. The most infamous event was their performance of pretending they were Dade voters. They pounded on a government office door trying to get election officials to stop the recount and it worked. So this all happened about the time Foley accuses Dems of doing it according to this article?

Republicans reinvented the word hypocrisy and there should be a brand new word that equals their farcical delusional lying lives. and souls.

Of course they don't want him to feel they are abandoning him. They may feel the same way about Hastert - hard to cover all their asses tho. Someone's going to feel let down and then going to tell.

an investigator for the Florida Inspector General's office, said shortly before he was found dead in a seedy hotel room, that his investigation into the Florida Department of Transportation's money laundering scandal "had tracked the corruption 'all the way to the top' and that the story would break in the next few weeks and I would be satisfied with the results."

It went deeper than what he and Clint Curtis already knew: That YEI and Tom Feeny (R-FL) had ordered software written that could steal an election prior to 2000!

What discovery had Lemme uncovered that could have gone deeper than that? We may never know.

His secret went to the grave with him. These are all clues to perhaps the greatest crime in our country's history.
