Pet store manager charged with willful burning of shop

By Brian R. Ballou and Raja Mishra, Globe Staff | October 7, 2006

CAMBRIDGE -- The manager of a pet store destroyed in a blaze last month was charged yesterday with setting fire to the shop and killing more than two-dozen exotic pets in an arson in which he sought to frame animal rights activists.

The fire on the second floor of the Boston Tropical Fish and Reptiles shop on Sept. 27 killed a collection of snakes, frogs, and fish, with the apparent arsonist spray painting ``No more exploitation of animals" on the storefront. Detectives at the scene said the graffito might lead them to the culprit.

...

Trinh was at the fire scene on Wednesday night and expressed grief as he pointed to the charred store he managed. But when a reporter sought to interview him, he quickly left. Prosecutors said Trinh was in the process of buying the store, which had not been doing well recently. They would not elaborate on his alleged motive.

The store's owner -- Dianne San Filippo , who was also at the scene -- wondered why animal rights activists would burn pets to death. ``Is that kind of death better than exploitation?" she asked.

1. I'M SO K&R-ING THIS BABY!!!
This whole thing stunk from the get-go and I hate how everyone is so ready to pin it on the animal activists, like THEY are some kind of big problem in this fucked up world, I don't think so!

6. Right, everybody just wanted to blame the animal rights activists.....
I don't think so, but what does it matter?

7. Apparently they did.
When the actual AR people with a pretty good idea of the logic and tactics behind AR-motivated actions explained why it clearly and blatantly wasn't an AR thing at all, they chose not to listen.

12. I disagree......
some people on the pro-animal rights activists side wouldn't even contemplate the notion that somebody who called themselve an activist just MIGHT be responsible. That they couldn't be ruled out.

start killing animals, you stop being an animal rights activist. Regardless.

15. We know our people, we know our history, we know tactics and we know
current AR thought and priorities. The action was not consistent with any of that, so it was a safe bet that nobody in AR was involved.

2. AR people liberate the animals
They may have torched stores later, but I've never heard of it.

Expect a lot of false flag operations by Repugs and by greedy fools who buy their propaganda.

AR activists do not kill animals. Or people for that matter. You are at best uninformed and at worst an ignorant fear and hate monger.

27. Unless they're running animal shelters, that is
http://www.nokillnow.com/PETAanimalpeople.htm

About six months after the Barakat expose appeared, PETA in 2000 sent euthanasia technician Teresa Gibbs to the no-kill Visakha SPCA, of Visakhapatnam, India, as a donated “shelter manager.” Seeking to undo the Visakha SPCA no-kill policy, Gibbs did severe harm to the organization’s donor, staff, and community relations before being fired.

http://www.nokillnow.com/PETAIngridNewkirkResign.htm

In 2003 we learned for the first time that Ingrid Newkirk - tireless defender of animals - has another face. During the 1970's her chosen profession was "dog catcher" and killer. Newkirk unabashedly describes her zeal for killing in her own words: "I'd go to work early, before anyone got there, and I would just kill the animals myself...I must have killed a thousand of them, sometimes dozens every day." She was so good at it she rose through the ranks to become director of District of Columbia's high-kill pound where she reigned for some years. There, under her rule, untold thousands more died.

Ingrid Newkirk is totally against companion animals, and her actions prove it.

33. Total bullshit.
Nice last link there, btw.

the Nokillnow.com site fails to give Ingrid's ENTIRE sstatement, and obviously has a distinct hatred for PETA. For those failing to do proper research, I've posted it here:

What she saw at the shelter affected her profoundly. 'I went to the front office all the time, and I would say, "John is kicking the dogs and putting them into freezers." Or I'd say, "They are stepping on the animals, crushing them like grapes, and they don't care." In the end, I'd go to work early, before anyone got there, and I would just kill the animals myself, because I couldn't stand to let them go through that. I must have killed a thousand of them, sometimes dozens every day. Some of those people would take pleasure in making them suffer. Driving home every night, I would cry just thinking about it. And I just felt, to my bones, this cannot be right. I hadn't thought about animal rights in the broader sense. Not then, or even for a while after. But working at that shelter I just said to myself, "What is wrong with human beings that we can act this way?"'

You owe Newkirk an apology.

Well.. ok maybe that is a bit over-the-top... but there had better be some serious jail time and about a zillion hours of community service for the local humane society at the very least.

Of course now it's become part of the internet 'facts' that animal rights activists burned down a pet store, but at least we know the truth.

When I first read it, it just didn't pass the smell test. The graffiti was too wordy and long, and no animal rights people I know would leave animals inside to die.

Only pure ignorance would rush to blame PETA and/or animal activists for a crime that would undermine the very principle that they stand for: the safety, rights and health of animals.
