CBS Bob Schieffer Gets It Right!! --Will Anyone Else Listen???
"Why does the government need a list of my phone calls?" he asked. "And what business does a democracy have running secret prisons? ... Do you believe that anyone would have known about these secret prisons or what was going on in Abu Ghraib if it had been left to the government to announce it?

"Some would argue these revelations hurt our cause. I argue just the opposite. Bringing mistakes to the fore is a strength, not a weakness."

Schieffer said America's great strength comes from emphasizing the values and principles that separate it from its enemies — "not by adopting their methods and their techniques."

14. W-w-w-wait a minute! He's JUST NOW figured this out? Isn't this the same
Bob Schieffer who is Bush 41's golf buddy? I'm glad the man is finally, FINALLY fed up, but come ON! He could've said something before instead of carresing * through that debate he moderated, in fact all throughout the '04 election. Ach! They're all toadies until they realize the ship really, REALLY is sinking. THEN they bail. We've been screaming for years and he finally tuned in to our channel. Bully for him. He coulda been somebody. Here's the sound of one hand clapping:

2. No wonder they replaced him with K-k-k-katie...
He speaks the truth & the networks can't let that happen on the nightly news.

6. Phil Donahue had higher ratings when he was on the air.
But ratings don't matter to the networks if the show doesn't pelase the pwoers that be.

7. Katie Has Already Revealed Her True Colors --now in 3rd and dropping...
Just take a look at the guests she spotlighted --Rush Limbaugh, conservative critics of the liberal media, etc. --all under the heading of "Free Speech."

The corporate side of CBS is still calling the shots for the news organization, and Couric is following the script.

IMHO she is getting the ratings she deserves, and she is doing harm to the journalism profession by failing to adhere to professional practices.

Bring back Bob, and the original 60 Minutes Crew --give them the $$, and back them up when challenged --and CBS would be NO. 1 in a hurry, and we would all be better off.

8. Sounds good to me except for the word 'mistakes'...
""Some would argue these revelations hurt our cause. I argue just the opposite. Bringing mistakes to the fore is a strength, not a weakness."

I don't believe these were mistakes. I think they were intentional forays into illegal and criminal practices.

Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 03:24 PM by Gabi Hayes
I can't believe how many people here have been fooled by his constant cozying up to the chimp: did you see his at the WH interview with him a few weeks/month ago. sickening

and did you forget his nauseating performance during the debates in 04?

do yourselves a favor and google Schieffer/media matters for a taste of what a tool he's been over the years

11. Remember...
he's a friend of the Bush family, probably more Bush Sr. So this demonstrates objectivity and is quite refreshing. He should have never been removed from CBS. Whether Katie is biased or not, she's flaky whereas Bob S. had decades of professionalism and had helped stabilize CBS when they needed it.

12. Very simple IMO--Schieffer is a journalist, Katie-poo is an entertainer
Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 04:09 PM by civildisoBDence
American broadcast journalism has fallen deeper and deeper under the spell of ratings-at-any-cost. You might call it Geraldo-ization. That explains why two morning show hosts, Charles (formerly Charlie) Gibson and Katie-poo (soon to be Katherine) Couric are sitting in the anchor chairs at ABC and CBS.

We could be the first democracy to ever entertain itself to death.

He could have practiced better journalism about the Bush administration after he stepped in Dan Rather's anchor shoes, but I guess it's better late than never.

as I mentioned earlier, he's NO friend of progressives, let alone dems

just google his name with media matters

that's all you need to know; you either weren't paying attention at the time, or have very selective memories, BS lovers

19. Now wait a minute!
Scheiffer has been roundly criticized in here for being too conservative. Now which is it? As I have stated on numerous occasions, all we want is neutrality. Some folks in here want all lefty all the time I guess. Sorry. It cannot work that way.

21. Neutrality and real journalism would be great.
However, I have held my nose and watched CBS news and Scheiffer ever since Dan Rather left. There were many golden opportunities passed over to put the screws to the guilty parties, in this administration and Congress on both sides of the aisle, that were overlooked by one Mr. Schieffer. Of course I stopped watching with the debut of Miss Kitty, er I mean Katy. I don't need to be served kool-aid by the madam media whore.

Kudos to Mr. Schieffer. I keep hoping that with the tide turning against the Repubes (my, that moniker has even more significance since the Foley thing, dunnit?), the media will wake up and start reporting more of the bu$hit they've been pulling for the past 6 years. Not holding my breath, though.

... I just thought he put it right in this particular comment. And who else is gonna listen?
It ought to be repeated by every MSM outlet, to remind themselves and their readers/watchers what the role of true journalism is in a democracy.

Anybody who has been listening to him for the last couple of years knows that he 'gets it' and has been fed up with things. Especially the control of the media by Republicans.

gooooooOOOO Bob! I sure miss him in the evenings.. :( Ain't watching Miss Perky and her Freedom of Speach/Meet the Conservatives segments.

31. I know this is cynical, but could it be ....
... the MSM sees the handwriting on the wall. The Bush Repubs are going to be voted out in a big way come Nov and 2008. The MSM is adept at gauging the pulse of the VIEWING PUBLIC, after all the Neilson ratings still rule just about everything because they translate into how many dollars they can charge advertisers.

The MSM is not going to get significantly more power to consolidate the media sources from the Bush Repubs, and since that is not going to happen, they are turning to the truth since they know that when DEMs take the majority in the House and Senate the subpoenoes and investigations of the Bush corruption will be outrageous --and they want to appear to be on the side of journalistic ethics.

They might actually do some investigative reporting since they don't want to be painted as the enablers they have been for the Bush corruption over the last 6 years.

In any case, it never hurts to remind people that the MSM plays a significant role in holding government accountable --and good to hear Schieffer tell the truth on them for a change.

32. yep. they are only interested in covering thier own hides.

the whole media needs to be reformed, the 1996 telecom act needs to be reviewed, and the media needs to be broken up, and reinstate the fairness or equal time doctrine on any network 'news' shows. All other shows should be considered 'non-news' or just plain shows.
