but NASCAR? I find it to be completely unenjoyable. And I've tried. I have friends who love it. Does nothing for me. At all.

My roommate is hooked on NASCAR. I have my own TV and watch it on his now and then. If the prayers bothered me, I could go to mine and change the channel.

I prefer more pure forms that feature what the fans are really there for:

Figure-8 racing and demolition derby. Everything else except Grand Prix is just left turns.

If you like to take apart and rebuild V8 motors, you're probably be a fan of NASCAR. If you like to take a $20 dollar bill and put a bic lighter to it to watch it burn, then you've met one of the minimum qualifications for becoming a stock-car race driver.

I'm a 4-cylinder kind of guy, haven't ever figured out how impoverished Southern rednecks can afford to drive gas-guzzling V8s, let alone race them at 10k RPMs around the track with race-fuel that costs approx. $10/gallon. You will spend $200 and burn up a motor for a one-time thrill on Sat. night. And this is amatuer-level racing. It isn't real NASCAR stuff which is major bucks to invest in the car.

I can barely afford to drive my 4-banger to work and back. At posted speed limits. Prayers can not hurt for the traffic, I encourage you to pray before driving on interstate highways every day. Praying before a NASCAR event is not a bad idea, people have been known to crash and burn on the track.

I have been to car races at Road America. It's a road race, not just left turns. Even that got a little boring after awhile.

I guess if I was going to drive about 200mph I would probably want to ask some deity for a little help.

southerner and have never lived anywhere but the South...the freaking buckle of this bible-belt even. So I think i've a right to speak out against some aspects of the southern culture that i find offensive, eh.

No one has the right to use such broadbrush terms in a disparaging manner. I really don't care where you live. Using a bit more respect and tolerance for others in our community who might not appreciate your offensive use of the term might be a better way to go next time.

Red-lining a V8 at 10k or more, for extended periods of time on the track, this is a serious torture test and an accomplishment of engineering by itself -- so anything that we can learn about improving the mechanical operation of an auto under those demanding conditions, it could possibly have utility in the production of better performing and more reliable street vehicles for mass-production.

Of course, if we run out of gasoline and have to watch NASCAR using electric or hybrid vehicles to race in the future, I think I could find that interesting, too.

Other than commenting out loud, I just ignore it - the southerners who dominate racing come up to NE and feel it necesary to push their culture as much as possible. You should see the blank stares and rolling eyes in the stands as the guy rambles on about how they do things "down South" & saying things like "y'all do pray to gawd dontcha". I'm not kidding when I say they push their culture to the max. I find it kind of funny actually - they have no idea how juvenile it appears to many people who have given themselves permission to think for themselves.

Not a rabid fan but I like the long track races like Talladaga. Im watching it today because my Steelers dont play until 8 tonight. And its a talledaga race.
