Someone in another thread mentioned Jon Stewart will be leaving the Daily Show in two years. Some posters below say it's only his contract that's up in 2008, not him. He's had a great run, but if he's going to go (I agree he shouldn't, but IF he goes, then) the question is who can fill the void?

If you Google it, news has it Jon Stewart's manager James Dixon negotiated for Jon to stay at Comedy Central until 2008. They recently (as in, the last eight months) came to the end of that negotiation period, because Jon's previous contract, at that time, was "up". This opened it to negotiations, and Jon was, for the moment, a free agent who could do anything and go anywhere. Understandably Comedy Central was probably very nervous during this period. Dixon and Stewart agreed with CC that Jon would stay on another few years, with *that* period ending in 2008. Whether Jon stays on TDS is a mystery. But his decisions tend to be stable. He has already been asked if he will stay on at the end of his current contract. His answers were along the lines of, "No," and "I don't want to do Daily Show forever. I want to do other things."

Performers are notorious for changing their minds about that, though. I think "What happens in 2008" will depend on these three factors and a hidden fourth:

1) whether Dems are in charge and how bad off the country is by the time Jon's contract expires,

2) the effect of this on Jon's big, soft, wonderful liberal conscience, and whether he feels guilt about leaving America stranded without his comedy should he leave at such a terrible time, and

3) what other offers are coming in by the time that happens.

Hidden 4) what Tracey, the kids, and his close friends think he should do.

My prayers are that Jon Stewart will never leave that show, unless the entire country has been turned completely back around to the days of sanity again. Then, he should do some good movies maybe. That's my humble uneducated opinion.

His style was pretty funny. Combined with the writers it would still be a good show. Nothing can match Jon Stewarts run though.

Sadly, he acted pretty caddish toward the women on the show, including the woman who created the show (David Letterman's old girlfriend, actually!). I'm just not sure a right winger like Kilbourne would work well with the show's format now, although I think they should definitely make fun of liberals when they act stoopid, too.

Merrill Markoe is Letterman's ex. Craig was a prick to Lizz, and he was a prick on camera too. Smarmy bastid. Can you tell I don't like him?

But, he has the right snarky attitude and would bring the correct sarcasm to it. Plus put him in a suit and tie behind Jon's anchor desk, and... weirdly, something "clicks".

But they havent done real great at replacing the older members who went on to greener pastures IMO.

The format of The Daily Show currently fits Jon Stewart like a glove. If Craig Ferguson wer to take it over, he'd have to change the format a bit.

Lewis Black is the only person on the show besides Stewart that gets to spoof the headlines without playing a character. Every single correspondnet plays a role just like Colbert when they do their segments. It's really hard to tell how any of the correspondents would do not playing a charcter and being themselves in Stewart's role.

What Jon does that so many can't is the interviews. He creates a friendly, respectful atmosphere where even rightwingers will take a chance. And then he punches them a couple times. Not a lot, just enough to let them know that he knows they're talking shit. Al Franken has a similar interview style. That's why Jon and Al get big-name guests. I think Maron could do the same. Maybe Lewis Black or Terry Jones could also.

They could do it Murphy Brown style, with Samantha Bee and some other people. (I don't know the new people yet).

I don't think Jon can be replaced. He molded the show to his sensibilities, and it worked. The network needs to try something new and energetic.

But so help them if they put a cretin like Colin Quinn or Carlos "Mencia" on the show.

The man needs yet another network to fail at!

David Cross would also be a good pick, come think of it, but I really think that someone that's currently in the show would be a mistake as a host - people will remember the "reporter", and that might detract from the "anchor/talk show host" image.

BTW, Brian Unger should get his own news-show on MSNBC - he's twice as reputable as a journalist as, say, Tweety or Dead Intern...
