First spinach, then beef, and now lettuce... wtf?
This is getting riduculous. CNN just reported that there is a possible lettuce e-coli outbreak and "Foxy" lettuce is being recalled.

:wtf:

1. Bush/Cheney de-regulated the FDA
I'm surprised they even put Nutrition facts on products, I don't think they have to anymore or they can lie now. Oh yes, we are in trouble. They are doing what Reagan couldn't do.

8. this e-coli was inside the plant as well as outside.
you could cook it good -- but not wash it off.

or as you say -- buy it local - not from any major grower or packager.

9. You're right. The warnings for spinach specifically mention
that washing it is not an option and I don't think cooking it was either. They were saying to completely dispose of it.

10. you can't wash off e. coli
that's a silly and dangerous suggestion

there are countries where no sane person eats raw vegetables, i suppose we have become one of them, we can't import mexican standards for growing and handling food and then be surprised that we end up with food that is of mexican quality

you don't eat raw lettuce in mexico without soaking it for 20 minutes in chlorine first

and now it's come to california

vegetables anyway.

7. Well, what do you expect when WE not only crap into the pool...
...but get our livestock to do so -- en masse -- as well?

You would not believe how much crap this civilization generates. Megatons of it. If we're ever going to wean ourselves off oil, btw, we ought to be looking at crap. It seems like an infinitely renewable resource.

22. Well, meat always had shit in it
And tumors and growths and hormones and antibiotics. The USDA is run by the industries it's supposed to regulate, and the FDA is toothless. I can only hope that one of these antiregulatory mooks gets E. coli and almost dies.

16. Remember the imported berries a few years back?
I think they were imported and were contaminated with E. Coli.

I heard one wingnut make the "point" that the FDA was pointless and anyone who still wanted it was delusional, since the outbreak happened even with that agency in existence.

No one called him on the obvious point that no one would KNOW about it without the FDA, and without SOME FDA inspections (they still aren't strict enough) hundreds and perhaps thousands would die every year. The claim that "the market would punish companies that had deadly products" doesn't work because we wouldn't be able to piece together what products might be at fault without a central agency keeping track of it all.

21. Actually, I can see produce prices getting a lot higher as gas goes down.
And the drought and the lost harvests all around the country will cause our money to go for less and less.

But hey, gas prices are low...so who cares? 800 billion derived from illegal immigrants, 200 billion to keep them out of the country. Now who knows how much will be lost as American currency becomes worth less and less.

but I live in the area where the tainted greens are coming from (in fact, I knew one of the Nunes brothers), and in every produce field there are two portable toilets.

27. Thank you....that was my first thought today
When I read about the lettuce and e-coli...I told myself...this seems exactly like that terra alert system we had...you know...green/yellow/orange/red....that was conveniently used, when we needed to be brought back into line? This is another damned terror alert system...only now they make us afraid to eat fresh vegetables...what's next??? or don't we want to know...cripes...fear, fear, fear...be afraid, be afraid...
