Ever since he was a youngster, Justin Peterson dreamed of becoming a Marine and following in the footsteps of his grandfather, a retired career officer in the Marine Corps for 20 years.
"The idea of being a gung-ho Marine always appealed to him," said his mother, Ginna Peterson.
Capt. Peterson, 32, the father of three and a resident of Davisburg, died Oct. 1 from a nonhostile vehicle accident in Anbar province in Iraq.
The Department of Defense said the incident was under investigation. He was assigned to the 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division 1 Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif.
He is the 102nd soldier with ties to Michigan to die in Iraq.
After graduating from Southfield Christian High School in 1992, he joined the Marine Reserves where he fulfilled his boot camp and combat training duties. While attending Taylor University, in Upland, Ind., he completed his weekend and summertime duty and was selected for Officer's Candidate School.
Once he earned his bachelor's degree in business in 1997, he was awarded a lieutenant's commission. During his military career he was stationed in North Carolina, Michigan, Virginia and California, before being sent to Iraq in April. He married Patricia Goss in 2002.
In addition to his mother and his wife, survivors include two sons, Jared and Jayden; a daughter, Caitlin; his father, Dale; two brothers, Jordan and Joshua; two sisters, Charity and Joy, and his grandparents, Don and Libby Woodworth.
