You-Tube and Google = Suppression of free speech?
Just a hunch, but could the recent purchase of the popular You-tube be a means to control media access? With all the re-airing of anti-Bush videos, the timing of the sale seems a little suspicious. Whom is behind Google?

Requiem: Free speech, we hardly knew ya, and now you're gone.

10. They have manipulated results on other 9/11 videos
'9/11 Press for Truth' had hundreds of thousands of page views which would have placed it on Google's popular top 100 list. They have also deleted many comments. I've read about other 9/11 video results they have managed to "adjust". There must be something going on.

33. video.google.com resets page views and deletes comments
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 10:38 AM by hpot
Keep your eye on the page views and comments. Some comments also mention the same observations. Last time I personally checked '9/11 Press for Truth', there were over 200,000 views. The counter currently displays 2,324 so it must have been reset by Google. For what purpose? I do not know. 'Terrorstorm' was also affected.

If it was a system wide problem why do the purges not affect all other videos such as the ones on the top 100 list? If it is not a system wide problem, which videos were affected by the purges?

38. Uh...
I don't see any other video in the top 100 with more than a few thousand hits. And given the massive use of video.google.com, all it probably indicates is that they reset all of the counters periodically to give a sort of "most popular right now" statistic vs. a "most downloads of all time" statistic.

As for the user comments, I have no idea, but given the sheer size of video.google.com, I highly doubt that they're moderating comments.

Take off the tinfoil.

46. Trailer=215k views , Full movie=18k views (combined)
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 01:32 PM by hpot
Google has deleted comments and views from popular 9/11 documentaries like '9/11 Press for Truth' and 'Terror Storm'. Just because they may have decided to leave a trailer untouched does not mean the deletions/purges never occurred. I am merely questioning the reason behind such purges and find it interesting.

34. I think that will be the way of the future;
video on internet distributed via a peer-to-peer network rather than from one central depository controlled by one entity.

But for the time being one will have a hard time competing with the likes of google.

9. Regardless of what we may think...
They are still private companies and can do what they please with their product. We as consumers are free to not use their product if we have any objections to how they run their business.

We might enjoy the freedoms of speech in this country, but not on private sites on the internet.

Google floats their little mantra... "don't be evil"
and you actually believe that shit?

Dude, they are mocking us...

read on...

The idea appeared in Technology Review citing Peter Norvig, director of research at Google, who says these ideas will show up eventually in real Google products - sooner rather than later.

The idea is to use the existing PC microphone to listen to whatever is heard in the background, be it music, your phone going off or the TV turned down. The PC then identifies it, using fingerprinting, and then shows you relevant content, whether that's adverts or search results, or a chat room on the subject.

It get's worse...

Technology Review said Google talked about this software in Europe last June, and that it breaks sound into a five-second snippets to pick out audio from a TV, reducing the snippet to a digital "fingerprint", which it matches on an internet server.

Given the furore caused when AOL released searches on the internet, there might be more than a few civil liberties activists less than happy for Google to put this idea into practice. Also, given that Google provides the software link between its search software and the microphone, it's a small step to making the same link to any webcams attached to the PC.

Pretty soon the security industry is going to find a way to hijack the Google feed and use it for full on espionage
.

so typical of you OCT'ers.

We've got the head of Google research saying he plans on recording sounds you make in your living room, office, bedroom, even your kid's bedroom.

How do you turn off that microphone in your TIVO again?

What happens when they embed microphones directly into the motherboards?

There has been declassified documents, that they can listen in off your telephone's transmitter, even when it's on the hook.

We can remove the batteries from the cell phones.
We can just remove the phone from the wall everytime we're not using those too.

That doesn't change the reality of the situation.

35. The point is
Google is my favorite search engine but I do not expect them to be morally superior than any other corporation. Like any other business, Google will submit to the government's will when enough pressure is applied.

The news about their censorship may be a few years old but remember,.. they are currently still censoring Chinese results.

39. Online Media Consolidation
YouTube and Google video are the two most popular video services on the Internet. Now that Google has control of Youtube they are the dominant player in this sector... until another competitor arrives.

If Yahoo bought YouTube, market dominance would be split with Google. That would mean less power under one corporation.

HOWEVER...

What you are suggesting is VERY possible given how much the almighty dollar bill is worshipped in this country. If truth and integrity were more important than money this country would NOT be in the situation it is in right now. Not only that, but most of us should know by now that Free Speech is just about dead. :(

43. It is the beginning of corporate control of the internet
After all, corporate dominance of the "old school" media is damn near complete, now they're looking for new pastures. I expect that there is going to be wave after wave of corporate mergers of internet companies over the next twenty years until much like "normal" media, you will literally have a handful of mega corporations controlling 95% of the 'net. This is just the beginning.
