PORT ST. LUCIE — A 30-year-old youth minister was charged with sexual battery Monday after being accused of improperly touching a 15-year-old girl.
According to the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, Jermey Patrick Gable worked at First Baptist Church of Port St. Lucie and had counseled the girl at her mother's request. The incident allegedly occurred in late April when the girl helped Gable paint his office at the church on Northeast Solida Drive.
Gable closed the door to the office, reportedly telling the girl they could get high with the door closed. He later told detectives he closed the door because the paint fumes were bothering the church's secretary, according to an arrest report.
The secretary and a pastor at the church recalled checking on Gable and finding the door closed; the pastor said he told Gable he should keep the door open, the report states. After painting, the girl said she went to a shower in a nearby office to wash off her arms and said Gable made a comment about paint on her shirt before pulling the shirt off. He allegedly touched her breast and genitals and asked her for oral sex as he dropped his pants, the report states.
When she refused, he pulled up his pants and apologized, the report states. The girl told detectives she didn't know what to do about the incident and became depressed before finally deciding to tell her mother. In an interview with detectives, Gable denied the accusations and agreed to a polygraph test. The sheriff's office said Gable's answers appeared to show he wasn't telling the truth, the report states.
When confronted with that information, Gable asked what would happen next and how much jail time he might do, though he did not comment directly on the girl's accusations. Gable, of the 1200 block of 25th Terrace Southwest in Vero Beach, was charged with a single count of sexual battery and was being held Tuesday at the St. Lucie County jail on $250,000 bail Tuesday.
