7. It matters because it points out that freedom of religion,

a thing we at least claim to value, is dying in Iraq. Christians are the minority faith, so what happens to them demonstrates whether the Neocons are establishing a democracy with basic values like freedom of religion, or an Islamic theocracy. It's not so much his Christian faith that matters, in terms of the political situation, but his status as the adherent of a minority faith.

Under Saddam, there were just over a million practicing Christians in Iraq. They were a minority in all three ethnic areas, but they were there. Many have fled, and those who are there are persecuted by the majority groups. With all of Saddam's faults, and they are legion, he did allow minority faiths basic rights, and he kept sectarian violence in check.

Besides, there's something sadly ironic about fundy Republicans supporting an invasion which has led to the persecution of Christians. Good thing we have a Christian president! :eyes:

6. I keep pointing out to my conservative colleagues
that Christians in Iraq were actually SAFER and freer to practice their faith under Saddam than they are now. Not that Saddam was a good guy, but Christians were allowed to worship together, etc. Tariq Aziz is a Christian (not a model Christian, but a member of a church nonetheless). Once there's a Shiite Islamic government in place, thanks to the Neocons, no such freedoms will exist.

But no one listens. Maybe this sad incident will get the attention of American Christians, who need to decide whether they're Christians or Republicans first.
