Moyers on America: Is God Green? / End Mountaintop Removal Mining
"Is God Green?"

Watch a preview: http://www.pbs.org/moyers/moyersonamerica/media_players/igg_general_video.html

Broadcast Schedule: http://www.pbs.org/moyers/moyersonamerica/airdates.html

A new holy war is growing within the conservative evangelical community, with implications for both the global environment and American politics. For years liberal Christians and others have made protection of the environment a moral commitment. Now a number of conservative evangelicals are joining the fight, arguing that man's stewardship of the planet is a biblical imperative and calling for action to stop global warming.

But they are being met head-on by opposition from their traditional evangelical brethren who adamantly support the Bush administration in downplaying the threat of global warming and other environmental perils. The political stakes are high: Three out of every four white evangelical voters chose George W. Bush in 2004. "Is God Green?" explores how a serious split among conservative evangelicals over the environment and global warming could reshape American politics.

An email from Appalachian Voices (http://www.appvoices.org) / ILoveMountains.org (http://www.ilovemountains.org)...

Is God Green?

I wanted to let you know – and ask you to spread the word – about an important PBS special that airs this week and prominently features the role of faith in the fight against mountaintop removal coal mining.

In “Is God Green?” – which airs this Wednesday, October 11 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check your local listings) -- Bill Moyers examines the changing views towards the environment among evangelical Christians.

The documentary features Allen Johnson, co-founder of Christians for the Mountains. As one review puts it:

The program explores the real-world consequences of mountaintop mining and its toxic by-products on the local water supply, profiling residents forced to live with drinking water allegedly contaminated by harmful chemicals and their fight against a subsidiary of the region’s largest coal company, Massey Energy.

Allen’s group is working to recruit local churches to explore the pollution problem as a theological and Biblical issue, and to join their fight. Today, after 12 years, the local government is building the infrastructure that eventually will bring clean water to the effected communities.

Here at Appalachian Voices, we know that people of faith have a critical role to play in the effort to end mountaintop removal mining. Five major religious denominations have already passed resolutions against mountaintop removal mining.

You can learn more about the intersection of religion and the fight against mountaintop removal mining by clicking on this link:

http://www.ilovemountains.org/prayers

And if you haven’t yet done so, please add your voice to the more than 2,000 Americans who have already pledged to help end mountaintop removal mining by visiting the ILoveMountains.org website:

http://www.ilovemountains.org/take_action/

Please forward this email to your friends and family, and invite a friend over on Wednesday to watch “Is God Green?” Getting the word out about the real consequences of mountaintop removal mining is critical to our efforts to end this destructive practice.

Thank you for taking action.

Bill Moyers Q&A on religion, environment
Grist magazine interviews him on new PBS series 'Is God Green?'
By David Roberts

Just after the 2004 election, in his 70th year, legendary journalist Bill Moyers retired from full-time television, giving up the reins of his beloved PBS show Now. But Moyers has not left behind his vocation or his network. This month, PBS will air a new three-part special, Moyers on America.

The second part -- Is God Green?, airing Oct. 11 -- traces the growing environmental consciousness of conservative evangelical Christians.

In discussing the subject, Moyers sounded as passionate, quick-witted, and indefatigable as ever. Like so many people, he seems to regard conservative evangelicals with an unresolved mix of admiration and exasperation, at once vexed by their political alliances and hopeful about their ability to pull their compatriots in a green direction.

3. Sapphire Blue, you're the best!

Once again, thank you for your Post.

It provides so much information that allows us to digest just how much Bush has used and abused the minds of his Base.

It is so sick.

Bless Al Gore for getting his message out.

Wonderful links, very interesting. I've been waiting for this Bill Moyers show for weeks -- got the VCR geared up. I think this is a very, very important topic -- this is human security, and the intersection of culture with these security issues.

5. I've inadvertantly stepped into this debate myself.
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 03:25 PM by intheflow
I'm showing a free screening of An Inconvenient Truth at church Sunday, and I opened the event up to the public. Response has been overwhelmingly positive, but a few Freepers have crept out from their crypts to rant about how global warming is a myth and that there is no connection between faith and the environment.

No connection between faith and the environment? Reminds me of a joke I heard once:

A bunch of scientists were standing around, congratulating themselves on how much they knew about the creation of life, particularly how they thought they knew enough now to create life. After a while, God got tired of the gloating and appeared before them.

"So, you think you can create life?" asked HaShem.

"Sure," replied the scientists. "We don't need a myth like you any more."

"Well, that's something I'd like to see," said Goddess. "How about we make a bet: we'll both make a life form and see who does it best."

"You're on!" cried the scientists, bending down to scoop up a handful of dirt.

"Uh-uh," said Allah. "Use your own dirt."

29. Thank god you posted this
I'd posted it the other day and got TWO responses, and I was begging peopel to watch, this is a VISIONARY program, there will be a Movement to Spiritualize the Environmental movement, and not just with Christians, making each person in the world FEEL the earth is ALIVE.

I've been working on a book for five years now on exactly this, Bill is getting it out there before me, but make no mistake about it, the is a REVOLUTION in Conscienceness, and it's COMING. The Universe is turning and NOW the Love for Nature will return in the hearts and minds of men.

We MISS the earth, it's what is Missing from our lives and with so many baby boomers at the age where they start to realize their mortality they will seek a spiritual path, doesn't have to be christian, the book I'm working on is more of melding of all religions, mostly just respect for being stewards of this precious planet. And my book will be couched in adventures in the Bush in Alaska, the ANWR specifically where I looked for Uranium for two summers by Helicopters, was chased by bears, visions on moutain tops, finding a dead caribou at the very mouth of the stream we used to drink, laying there dead with the flow of that water coming out of it's body. The caribou is a symbol for the transition between two worlds, and that's one of the acts of symbolism in my adventure book.

I've even got some Hollywood interest in it, and am meeting with Ralph Steadman on Halloween to discuss the cover for it, the book being a mix of Hunter S. Thompson, Hemmingway, Bukowski, sort of "Catcher in the Rye" set in Alaska..

I'm going to have an edited version within a few months and am looking forward to changing a lot of minds in the world, maybe lighting a spark that will make a fire like my Hero Gore.

Bill is giving you a taste of the future and is skating to where the hockey puck will be, DON'T miss this, you'll be five years ahead of the curve :)

Thanks for getting the word out!

I remember when Bush first signed the mountain-top removal legislation, most people I told didn't even believe it...it just sounded too loony-tunes to be true. To actually see the affects of this disastrous policy is just a total mind-fuck.

59. Some cities are built this way
Seriously. San Diego is a good example of an extremely mountainous region that was built out by cutting the tops of mountains; I remember the blasting they would do way back in the day to take the tops off mountains.

Did you see the program? We're not talking about building cities. We're talking about destroying towns, killing people, wiping out rivers and streams and wildlife and drinking water -- for corporate profits for one company and it's shitheel CEO.

FYI, I know how San Diego and Boston, etc, were built. Please, watch the program.

61. I get that...
...and it is particularly bad in the coal mining regions. I know more about how this works than you can imagine, and in reality it is a bit of a lose-lose proposition. I own large swaths of land in the west, including a rather large mountain that they have recently discerned to be sitting on a large deposit of rich gold ore. The major mining companies have bought rights all around the edges of that land. Not a single piece of land I own is developed, and none of it has been lived on in over a century so it is all pretty wild.

I am not a miner, and have no real interest in mining. In fact, I am major nuisance to the mining companies because I continue to run interference against the big mining firms -- believe it or not, Western law is pretty friendly to the landowner in this regard. I am a conservationist. I buy good-looking wild land and pretty much let it stay wild.

On the flipside, I understand the complex matter of mining pretty well. The US has a lot of mineral resources (one of the few natural resources we actually export), and as prices continue to climb due primarily to increased consumption in Asia they are looking to maximize the potential resources at their disposal. The conundrum is this: they are having a hard time meeting supply any way you look at it, and they can either do the mining in North America (with its relatively strict rules) or they can do it in South America which has very few rules. I know that it is much worse in West Virginia and parts thereabout, but in the West the same issues are coming up. In practice, because of how many of the remaining deposits are situated, you have to tear down the mountain to get at them as a practical matter. The question is ultimately what are we going to do about mineral supplies. By outlawing production in the US, we merely move the damage to countries with far less strict rules. On one hand, the damage is often over-stated and the minerals really need to come from somewhere. On the other hand, we need to do it in a sane and minimally destructive manner that still makes economic sense.

As a conservationist I am sympathetic, but I am also realistic enough to realize that there is an economic calculus that effects billions of people here with no easy solutions. Though with respect to coal, I would prefer that we use pretty much *any* other energy source.

32. I thought it was a good show.
It bugged me that the one preacher made such an emphasis that he was promoting "Father Creation" NOT "Mother Earth" - as if it would be so bad to think of creation in terms of the feminine. But such is life in the USA.

It was encouraging to hear from evangelicals who are making the environment a priority - according to the show - it's 63% of the them - so that's pretty good.

These shows usually repeat - like in the middle of the night tomorrow night or something.

43. It was a good show
and I wasn't bothered so much by the Father Creation wording, doesn't matter if you call it God (a buzzword in my opinion, the one we all throw our garbage AT and INTO), or Particle String Theory glueing the universe together with a single Electron that imitates many and can't be everywhere at the same time but IS..

What bothered me is the CREEPY asshole that Bill interviewed stating that we weren't supposed to "worship" thing that crawled, even quoting a bible passage WAY out of context.. they showed the guy walking barefoot in the ocean, and I looked at my wife and said, "Sure hope his skin doesn't suck up some chemical in there and give him cancer.."

I would have invited that guy out to the woman's house where the tap water was BLACK and sat him down for some Lemonade, since he should have a POWERFUL thirst, then once he'd drank it, I would have shoved a list of chemicals in that water as long as your arm over to him and said, "I just poisoned you with ALL of these chemicals, anyone of which may give you cancer in the future.. but of course that's FINE with you isn't it? God's will?"

People like that should be hanging from light posts after a crowd gets through with them, "cost rational" my ass, these are PEOPLE you SLIMEBALL!!

So glad to see a point where we can MERGE with the evangelicals, I don't have to believe in their version of "god" to plant trees and demand accountability, and THIS is what America is ALL ABOUT. I will Defend their right to pray, and they can defend my right to clean water, eh?

See, we CAN all get along, and this Proves it :)

... by Exxon/Mobil, who testified before the U.S. Senate last month {http://www.interfaithstewardship.org/pages/article.php?&id=161 (real separation of Church & State :sarcasm: )}... he was the CREEPY asshole.

Pollution, global warming, Hurricane Katrina - all God's will, indeed :puke:. According to Beisner, God, rather than bush, is causing global warming? God, rather than bush, gutted environmental protection laws? God, rather than bush, cut funding for the NO levees? God, rather than bush, delayed & interfered w/response to Katrina's victims? God, rather than bush, is blowing up the Earth's mountaintops for the coal beneath? God, rather than bush, is responsible for the poisonous black water coming out of the tap at that woman's house? Humankind has no free will, no responsibility, no fucking brains?

No, it's not God. It is bush. Hugo Chavez was right... and El Diablo es en La Casa Blanca.

55. YES
That was what I kept screaming at Bill to ask this TURKEY in the interview, "IS GOD RUNNING THOSE BULLDOZERS?" !!

This man should be given the Mussolini treatment, and on Pay Per View. A Traitor of the first order, to Americans, and his fellow man.

In his OWN Book, Genesis it says that "Man was given dominion of all the animals of the Earth." Does this not include thei environment? If we are to care for the animals as GOD might, being made of HIS IMAGE, then imagine how we are to treat HUMANS on an environmental stand.

I have to admit I liked the man in charge of the Evangels in Wash who is standing up for the environ.. someone that creates a BRIDGE for ANY American to join, no matter what religion, a SANE Christian with his own morals, as is his right.

BUt that other clown must think that Kiddie Kancer is SO CUTE, having come from God. Man do I have a Biker bar he should visit, God is telling THEM to put that sanctimonious ass in Traction..

Thanks again for the alert on this and the LINK!

kool-aid wearing off.

53. More kool-aid might wear off if the backwash reads 'Tempting Faith' ....
... & watches Countdown's segment about the book (http://video.msn.com/v/us/msnbc.htm?g=3DC99215-3465-4C8D-BE32-EDB1AA91C4A8&f=00&fg=copy). They might not like finding out that they've been played for fools.

56. The Kool Aid is charcoal flavored
and Black in color now in some areas :)

That poor woman and all the rest, and STILL washing dishes in that water, sheesh lady, there's more than a funky flavor, there are LETHAL chemicals in there!

Lethal right wing Kool Aid, what will they think of next?

57. The expression is "Gawd's green earth," not gray earth
Not that I have a deity of choice or anything, I'm just sayin'...
