Two words. Thurman Munson.
Absolutely shocking that the Yankees could have another player die this way even this many years later. My thoughts and prayers are with the Lidle family.

1. just posted the same thought to the LBN thread
one would think Steinbrenner would have hammered down that "no flying private planes" part of the contract by now.

2. See, that's what I was thinking.
I expect that will be remedied shortly.

11. He was traded to them
So I don't think George had much choice but take the contract the player had with the prior club.

4. I remember that day
Hubby called me at home with the news and you would have thought someone in our family died. He was a favorite.

5. KO was just interviewed by Tweety on MSNBC.
KO spoke of 5 major league ball players that died in plane crashes while they were piloting.

Tweety tried to get KO to speculate on Cory's psychological state. KO, being the balanced adult that he is, declined to speculate. Tweety then apologized to KO for bringing up the subject.

6. KO raised the level of that discourse...
After Tweety tried to take it to the tabloid level. KO used such discretion. Evidently the adult in the room - as you pointed out!

7. A bunch of major leaguers have also died in boating accidents
Cleveland lost a bunch of pitchers one year. And Norm Cash died in a boating accident.

9. Athletes and Planes
Nascar Drivers tend to pilot their own planes to and from the race track. They then sleep in the hauler once it arrives. I am surprised that only a few of them have been killed in plane accidents. Athletes want to control everything that affects them and it is not uncommon to see learn to fly. It allows them the freedom of avoiding long security lines at the airport as well as autograph seeking fans.

10. I have never been a Yankees fan, but I loved Thurman Munson. I can
remember like it was yesterday the news report telling us that he had been killed.

The Lidle family will be in my thoughts and prayers, too.

12. It reminded me of Munson.
Keith O did a good piece on Thurman Munson and some other related history.

Another of the athletes I admired who died in a small plane crash was the great heavyweight champion, Rocky Marciano. He died in an accident at Newton, Iowa on August 31, 1969. He would have turned 46 the next day.
