Thank you DU. You were all there last year when she made her stand in that awful ditch. DU'ers rallied, can we rally now?

OSLO, OCTOBER 11: Why would any decision made by five low-key,
publicity shy Norwegians meeting in secret in a back room in Oslo be
worthy of a global news flash the moment it was announced?

Because it is they who decide the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize,
and on Friday they'll make a short, public statement that will focus
world attention on topics ranging from environmental awareness to
advancing peace in Indonesia.

But in the weeks and months building up to the annual announcement,
speculation of who could win is rife, with names as diverse as
American entertainer Oprah Winfrey to veteran peace negotiators like
former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari who helped foment a peace
deal with Indonesia's government and Aceh separatists last year.

Ahtisaari brokered the talks between the two through his Crisis
Management Initiative and betting companies are speculating that he
could share the prize with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang
Yudhoyono and the Free Aceh movement.

Others touted as possible winners are Russian human rights activist
Sergei Kovalyev and Chechen lawyer Lida Yusupova; British-based
charity Oxfam; Chinese dissident Rebiya Kadeer who has fought for the
rights of Uighur Muslims in China; and American anti-war activist
Cindy Sheehan, whose son was killed in Iraq.

Although only a dozen women have won the Nobel Peace prize since it
was first awarded in 1901, two of those were in the past three years:
Iranian human rights activist Shirin Ebadi in 2003 and Kenya
environmentalist Wangari Maathai in 2004.

"For the first time in history, there are five political parties
represented on the committee," said Geir Lundestad, the prize
committee's non-voting secretary, encompassing the spectrum of
Norway's political scene - from the far left to the far right.

When I think of Nobel Peace Prize I think of people like Gandi, who have changed millions of lives for decades, Mother Theresa, folks like that..

And remember, the NPP was created by the Man who invented DYNAMITE, sheesh :)

dynamite has probably been used at least as often for civil engineering projects (necessary infrastructure work) as it's been used to take human life. There aren't too many things that are as dangerous about which the same thing could be said.

If she is chosen, it will be a direct international slap in the face to the Bush Regime, and I would savor that.

I can't think of a better awardee.

I believe either Rebiya Kadeer or Mahtti Atthisari (sp on both?) are more deserving. Especially the former, who left her position high in the Chinese hierarchy to fight for her people the Uigurs (sp?). She's been imprisoned, had her children arrested and probably tortured, and the Chinese government have tried to strongarm the Norwegian government into forcing the Nobel committee to discard her.

There have been choices that have been less than fortunate (an understatement, I know) especially everytime they try to compromise (Mandela and de Klerk; Rabin, Peres and Arafat.) But they've also given it to some really deserving people - Jimmy Carter, Wangari Mathaai, Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kiy, MLK jr, as well as organizations (diverse UN organizations, Amnesty International, the Red Cross etc.) Moreover, in most of the world (perhaps except in the US) it gives the laureate a legitimacy of which nations feel they must be careful - would Aung San Suu Kiy still be alive if she wasn't a Nobel Laureate?

Her courage is an inspiration. I guess we'll know tomorrow - I hope to sneak a peek at the announcement between classes. All the members of the committee are respected former politicians, even if one member is from the Norwegian Progress Party (populist, and on certain issues so dark blue (i.e. conservative) it's almost brown.)

I hope it happens!

Wonderful on two counts: (1) what a GRAND SLAP IN THE FACE to the Bush administration, and (2) what a wonderful affirmation of Cindy's insistence that Bush speak the unfettered truth about Iraq and why our soldiers had to die. By today, Bush's decision to invade a non-threatening country has killed more soldiers than Osama Bin Laden's decisions to perpetrate 9-11 killed U.S. citizens. Which -- Bush or Bin Laden -- has done more damage to America and the world?

With the Military Commissions act soon to be signed, it might be a good move to give it to her. At least that will be one visible dissident that the neoconservatives wouldn't dare declare an enemy combatant.

I do hope you are honored with this award! You certainly are worthy of it. I won't get my hopes up too high yet. From the way the article is written, it sounds like they are leaning toward Ahtisaari, Bambang and the Free Aceh Movement.

Still, for Cindy to be considered for the Nobel is quite an honor in and of itself!

Umm, may I ask...why Oprah?

The downside is that the monetary prize would probably be unavailable to him.

That would send quite a message if she won it.

Hopefully this month.
