Appears an AP writer is on a Reid witch-hunt

AP's Reid Story Doesn't Add Up

By Paul Kiel - October 11, 2006, 11:10 PM

Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) "collected a $1.1 million windfall on a Las Vegas land sale even though he hadn't personally owned the property for three years," the AP reports.

Except that's wrong. Reid made a $700,000 profit on the sale, not $1.1 million. Also, the story, by the AP’s John Solomon, makes it sound as if Reid got money for land he didn't own. But that's not the case.

It’s not the first time that Solomon has published a misleading story about Reid. This is the third such story by Solomon over the past six months. Each time, Solomon has hit Reid for taking actions which might create the appearance of ethical impropriety. But because Solomon writes for the most powerful news organization in the land, these very gray-shaded stories pack a wallop. It doesn’t help that on numerous occasions, he has missed or distorted key details – missteps that help blow up his stories.

Snip…

On two earlier occasions, Solomon has over-inflated his stories on Reid. TPM readers might remember his expose on Reid's involvement with Jack Abramoff (which, after exhaustively detailing an Abramoff’s associate’s contacts with Reid’s office, failed to mention that Reid didn't vote the way Abramoff wanted him to) and his stories on Reid's acceptance of passes to a boxing match from the Nevada Gaming Commission (which managed to expunge a host of mitigating details too plentiful to name here).
There's an old saying in journalism that three examples make a trend. I think we have a trend here. Solomon’s apparent weakness for detail is one issue. But most curious is the fact that we live in the muckiest times in recent memory, and yet Solomon, at the helm of the most powerful news agency in the country, persists in roaming the wide ocean of Congressional corruption in a Captain Ahab-like hunt for Reid's ethical missteps.

1. Why? Are Democrats immune from corruption and greed?
I think as more truth is revealed about Washington D.C. and the uncontrollable corruption taking place there, we will find the two party system is simply a "mask".

A mask to hide that the two parties are now essentially the same.

The more accurately described one party system could be renamed the "wealth" party.

3. Reid did what he was required to do by LAW. That's a fact.
Solomon does not report FACTS.

Nothing to do with whether "Democrats immune from corruption and greed" or not; it's about a reporter who isn't reporting facts.

5. You didn't answer my question Lynn.....

and I think its important to ask yourself, how do you know he did everything required by law?

Because his office told you so?

I think Americans need to wake up to the fact that these individuals in power in Washington - rich privileged, insulated men (and some women) aren't looking out for us. That is the reality, no matter how much we like it, it is still the reality we are faced with.

What we are going to do about it is up to us.

The primarily white, rich, overindulged men are looking out for themselves - irregardless of the party affiliation.

Sure are there exceptions - absolutely. But not many.

Perhaps Mr. Reid is not guilty, or as guilty as the AP implies - however my point is I wouldn't blindly accept what he says or what ANYONE says any more, simply because he calls himself a Democrat.

That means nothing unfortunately anymore.

The corporations, religious (patriarchal) institutions and the money changers have our parties bought hook line and sinker. The corporations and money changers recruit their own candidates and make sure they win.

Can we do something about it? Sure, however it will take time and the willingness to look at both parties honestly and fearlessly.

6. There are plenty of groups

and Republicans looking into every Democrat's background. Does the name William Jefferson ring a bell?

The OP article is about a reporter trying to create the appearance of impropriety. Why would your post about a deceptive report try to portray both parties as exactly the same to a point of being indistinguishable as separate?

8. I don't mean to imply they are equal, however look at the end result.
The Democrats (many if not most of them in name only)have allowed for all of our rights as citizens to be imperiled, they have even voted in lock step with Republicans on some of the most damaging pieces of legislation in our history.

The Patriot Act
The Iraq "War Resolution"
The Bankruptcy Bill
The Military Commissions - not a majority of Democrats, but way too many

so many other laws that I cannot remember at this time

Need I add the judicial appointments, the Supreme Court appointments they have refused to fight?

Something I believe is wrong when neither party is listening to what their constituents are saying.

Its because they don't have to listen anymore.

4. Er,... the original post is about un-truths, not "truth".

If you have arguments for the truthfullness of said complaints against Reid, then post those. But don't bitch that someone is bothered by press dishonesty.

And frankly, if you believe the two parties are "essentially the same", why the hell do you have 1000+ post on a board that dedicated to promoting Democrats?

2. Reid did exactly what he was required to do by LAW.
He did own the land; he was required to claim it as a personal sale & income.

And it's time AP cans Solomon. A reporter that can't get his facts straight isn't.

7. This sounds like a legal lien on the property,
rather Reid held a mortgage to the buyer, which would list him as a holder of said property, until loan was paid...legal...
