First, the disclaimers:
- Divorce is a painful, personal thing.
- Tom Delay has no supernatural powers.
- Correlation is not causation.
And now the story. First, there was this little tidbit:
Even before next Tuesday's premiere of "Dancing with the Stars," Tom DeLay is urging those on his mailing list to swing its vote to one competitor in particular, the Republican-friendly country singer Sara Evans.
And then, today, I read this bit of news:
Country singer Sara Evans on Thursday announced she was filing for divorce and quitting the "Dancing With the Stars" television competition.
You can read the full stories through the links I provided, but I will give you the best part right here. Tom Delay, former Republican and House Majority Leader, sent an email to thousands of people asking them to watch a reality TV show and vote for country singer Sara Evans. In itself, that is goofy. But it gets better. In his email, he said:
Sara Evans has been a strong supporter of the Republican Party and represents good American values in the media. From singing at the 2004 Republican Convention to appearing with candidates in the last several election cycles, we have always been able to count on Sara for her support of the things we all believe in. Let’s show Sara that same support by watching and voting for her each week to help her win this competition.
Equally as important, the letter goes on:
One of her opponents on the show is ultra liberal talk show host Jerry Springer. We need to send a message to Hollywood and the media that smut has no place on television by supporting good people like Sara Evans.
Sara, he concludes,
... will be a great representative of the values that we want to see in the media and we should all support her to keep her on the show as long as possible.
And now that great representative of Republican values has quit the show and is getting divorced. Damn.
Forget the obvious - that this was a dance competition on TV and Tom Delay was an idiot to drag politics into it. But he did, and now we are all left to wonder. Is divorcing your husband really the best way to demonstrate "good American values" to "Hollywood and the media?"
And on a bigger scale, at this point, is there anything that the Republican Party has touched that is not worse for their effort? FEMA, the economy, Iraq, national security, the environment, and now Sara Evans' marriage. Is nothing sacred?
