President Eisenhower, born Oct 14, 1890
My little tribute, since we share a birthdate :)

Thirty-Fourth President
1953-1961

Born: October 14, 1890 in Denison, Texas

Died: March 28, 1969 in Washington D.C.

Just a few quotes courtesy of:

A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both.

An atheist is a man who watches a Notre Dame - Southern Methodist University game and doesn't care who wins.

An intellectual is a man who takes more words than necessary to tell more than he knows.

Any man who wants to be president is either an egomaniac or crazy.

Don't join the book burners. Do not think you are going to conceal thoughts by concealing evidence that they ever existed.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid.

How far you can go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without?

I can think of nothing more boring for the American people than to have to sit in their living rooms for a whole half hour looking at my face on their television screens.

I deplore the need or the use of troops anywhere to get American citizens to obey the orders of constituted courts.

I despise people who go to the gutter on either the right or the left and hurl rocks at those in the center.

I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.

I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it.

I think that people want peace so much that one of these days government had better get out of their way and let them have it.

If men can develop weapons that are so terrifying as to make the thought of global war include almost a sentence for suicide, you would think that man's intelligence and his comprehension... would include also his ability to find a peaceful solution.

If the United Nations once admits that international disputes can be settled by using force, then we will have destroyed the foundation of the organization and our best hope of establishing a world order.

If you want total security, go to prison. There you're fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking... is freedom.

1. Let me add some
"The only way to win World War III is to prevent it."

"Only Americans can hurt America."

"The president cannot escape from his office."

"In the counsels of Government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the Military Industrial Complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists, and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes."

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed."

13. Thanks for these too !
There were so many at the brainyquote link, probably many others elsewhere, no wonder the 50's were so "happy" and "innocent". Now about his v.p. Nixon...:)

4. If Eisenhower were alive today
Edited on Sat Oct-14-06 08:37 PM by Horse with no Name
He would be a Democrat.
He once warned of the Texas oilmen who would seek power.
I am searching for the quote but cannot find it.

7. The MOST amazing quote from Eisenhower--found it
"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

:pals: for Ike. I grew up in a world that believed he was an honorable ex president. Even with Dem presidents in the WH.

He was everybody's wise grandfather.

31. The quote is not complete, because Dwight actually named the person
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

-- Dwight D. Eisenhower in a letter to his brother Edgar, November 8, 1954

H.L. Hunt was the person who discovered oil in Texas and together with other oil millionaires like Clint Murchison they tried to gain political influence as well. This is the group which was later called The Texans by Richard Nixon and main persons during that period (because Hunt was a bit earlier) were George H.W. Bush, Robert Mosbacher and James Baker III. So he is literally talking about the group of people which would later lead by the Bush family.

6. Nice quotes
I'm old enough to remember when Eisenhower was President. I remember him being teased for his golf outings. I remember his heart attacks. I think he ad two. I also remember when he sent the 101st Airborne to Little Rock in 1957 to enforce school desegregation (an interesting precedent the Chimp never considered when he refused to dispatch the military after Katrina). And every time you drive on an Interstate? Well, that's Ike.

I bet he'd be disgusted at what's become of his GOP....

24. I so agree, and yes, he's the father of the
Interstate Highways, which is bittersweet to me because it was the beginning of the end of the passenger rails.

Now I'm a NARP :toast:

He was so apolitical before geting into Presidential politics that the Dems tried to recruit him as a candidate in 1952.

Still a different era, maybe, like today, it was war weary (Democratic Party) politics, and he was definitely not a politician.

What have we learned?

30. Unfortunately, Ike had his problems
Operation Ajax in Iran (and Operation Surprise in Guatemala) were among them. He also didn't do enough to enforce Brown vs. Board of Ed (but neither did FDR or Truman enough either despite being pro-Civil Rights in speeches. Kennedy and Johnson also had to be pushed by the Civil Rights Movement before they became more assertive on the issue.)
