WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Tuesday the U.S. military is too strong to lose the war in Iraq, but ultimately political solutions will be needed to win.

"You've got a situation where it's not possible to lose militarily," Rumsfeld said. "It's also going to require more than military power to prevail."

Rumsfeld, in comments to reporters at the Pentagon, said U.S. training of security forces in Iraq had been "rushed" but that placing U.S. trainers within the Iraqi police force would gradually boost Iraq's ability to reduce violence on its own.

(snip)

Rumsfeld also declined to comment on a statement from Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John Warner, a key Republican from Virginia, that the United States might have to consider a change of course if the Iraqi government fails to restore order within two or three months.

2. Rumsfeld doesn't understand war: CarbonDate
It's green army men to him. If the entire populace of Iraq turns on us, then yes, we can very well lose militarily, not just diplomatically. What are we going to do? Kill everybody? That sort of victory is still a loss, because nothing is gained by burning the village behind you.

4. at this point it looks to me like the only way we could win is by killing
all the Iraqi. the war, its a cooked goose, ka-poot, finny, over. And so many lives lost that the world body politic will have to do something to them who waged this war, not the battlers tho.

8. You said,"we can very well lose militarily." True, but...
... if you were a Dem politician, you'd be crucified for that phrase.

Hannity: He says our boys can't do their job!
Colmes: I think you're taking this out of context a little, and -
Hannity: 'We can lose.' Not only that, 'VERY WELL lose.' So our brave servicemen and women are not just losers, but big losers. Isn't that what CarbonDate says?
Colmes: Sure, Sean.

Limbaugh: Carbondate wants our boys to lose, that's all there is to it. And with a name like that, I bet he believes in palentology. More right after my fix.

Coulter: Now, that's the kind of traitorous - not it's blasphemy. And it's about time to start crucifying these kinds of - it all goes back to Clinton and the perverse seed of - but that's old ground and everybody knows Clinton, Foley, Carbondate, and the whole unAmerican - and you know if just makes me sick. Watch my Adam's apple twitch when I talk about these sickos.

Every MSM talking head: Tune in for more about the CarbonDate scandal: what was said, and why he thinks our military isn't really up to snuff.

Peace!

3. Undoubtedly this was an early underlying belief used against
anyone talking about the risks of invading Iraq. In the NeoCon mind it was surely a no-lose thing.

5. How can you lose if you have no objective? And how can you win?
I wonder what Rummy's objective du jour is? And I wonder, since he says he can't lose, if he would be willing to try to tell us exactly what his definition of losing is. He won't because he doesn't know.

enough, we are committing war crimes in Iraq, and ethic cleansing.

These people seem to win or sort of fade away after they get some of the things they want.

14. Someone please remind me the last time a country 'won' an occupation.
The Iraq war was declared over on May 1, 2003. Dumbo strapped on his codpiece, watched the guy to his left catch a 3 wire, and said on the deck of the USS Lincoln.

15. He's right on both counts.
"You've got a situation where it's not possible to lose militarily," Rumsfeld said. "It's also going to require more than military power to prevail."

We cannot lose militarily because we are not being challenged militarily.

Unfortunately, as he states, our military cannot control the situation there.

So, Rummy, why the hell is our military still in Iraq?

I would love to see both Cheney and Rumsfeld both go down together, they are joined at the hip anyway. I hate these people.
