Iraq PM Blocks Civilian Death Toll Release

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 20, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(AP) Iraq's prime minister has barred the Health Ministry from releasing alarming casualty figures that showed violence in Iraq was killing 100 civilians a day and provided a rare insight into the worsening sectarian conflict, according to an internal U.N. memo obtained Friday.

The memo from top U.N. envoy for Iraq Ashraf Qazi to several senior U.N. officials said Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki's office had twice instructed the ministry not to release the numbers to the United Nations and that his office would now be responsible for releasing any such information.

1. I'm sure they're only following...
our orders.

They have been under orders NOT to report
civilian casualties since the invasion
began.

I think before the 665,000 latest estimate,
the highest the chimp would admit to was, like
300....or some other ridiculously low number.

6. They're admitting to 30,000 NOW
Really, they were completely STONEWALLING
before this. What with their "smart bombs"
"shocking and awing" all over the place.

7. He admitted to 30,000 "more or less" in December
13 months after the first Lancet report of over 100,000 dead.

Will he admit to maybe 50,000 now?

4. The Sadrists control the Health Ministry.
So... will the order actually be obeyed? This AP article is a further refinement of the original reports and obviously the first 2 paragraphs don't even mention Sadr's bloc. There's an assumption here that the order will actually be obeyed. I'm not sure the jury's back from deliberations on that.

8. I'm still waiting to hear the casualties resulting from the ammo explosion
Anyone who saw that video knows there is NO WAY there were NO casualties or injuries.
