A conservative colleague just sent me this:
Edited on Sun Oct-22-06 08:24 AM by Nimrod2005
We talk politics all the time. He is no fundie, but it is good to see, coming from him, a 70 year old white man.

Few months ago, I was talking to him about how we have to have real opposition in DC, how we need to have more balance in our governement...etc. He was not having any of it.

Now this:

"I think this election may be the turning point. We are going to vote
and not even look at names... just select whatever has a "D" next to
it. Have never, ever done that before but it's time to punish those
arrogant dopes!"

1. I like it for the hope it provides
However I learned a long time ago a lot of people especially Republicans can not be trusted. I am not having any expectations about the election. I do have hope though..

3. reminds me of a recent variation of an old joke
bush is walking down the street - he comes across a small boy sitting in a front yard with a box of 2 week old kittens..

after initial pleasantries - the boy informs bush that the kittens are republicans

a few weeks later, bush and cheney are walking down the same street. bush tell's cheney about the boy and republican kittens.

bush then spots the boy in the front yard, and yes, there are the kittens. bush and cheney rush over to the boy, they chit chat for a few moments - then bush says to the boy "Son, tell the Vice-President here what political party your kittens belong to"

the boy beams and with a large smile says "They belong to the Democratic Party!"

Cheney scowls, bush sputters "But son, a few weeks ago you told me they were republicans."

The boy nods, "yeah, they were, but now their eyes have opened."

9. That was true in 2004 also..
at least among those that I knew. Many R's switching to D's, none going the opposite way.

Republicans have gotten to where even the most staunch R's, which he is, can't defend them anymore.

Putting them in jail and stripping them of their ill-gotten gains is punishing them.

18. Hmm, I phone banked and got "The only good Democrat is in the grave"
I thanked him for his time, hung up, and went on to much more supportive people.

Kind of funny, though, that after all this he still thinks ONLY republicans are GOOD people.

14. I so badly want to ask these people why they would not listen before the..
House was stolen? And, the Senate, and courts, and the White House? And, all that money that we now have yet to pay back? Why were they so arrogant? Why did they believe everything these people said about themselves and especially why did they believe everything they said about Dems?

But, I'm told not to.. not socially correct...

16. Had they run on impeachment, they probably would have picked up. . .
Edited on Sun Oct-22-06 01:38 PM by pat_k
. . .about 5% of the white male vote.

As noted in the quoted sections below, some variation of the following has been posted on DU many, many times.

Thanks for posting another bit of supporting evidence.

I see or hear about more cases every week.

And with every case, the pain of the missed opportunity (running on impeachment) increases.

I have posted the following (or some variation of it) numerous times over the years.

The most serious problem members of the Democratic Party face is the perception that they are weak

Contrary to what many Democratic strategists believe, the perception of weakness has NOTHING to do with stance on national security. It is rooted in:

  1. The reticence that centrists seem to have when it comes to accusation and punishment. (Something the right clearly revels in.) Instead of going after wrong-doers, Democratic leaders seek to "investigate" or "make sure it doesn't happen again" (and the Republicans chuckle, "Gee, for a minute there, I though they were actually going to do something.")

  2. The tendency to refrain from fighting the good fights for "practical" or "strategic" reasons. Members of the Democratic Party may believe they are "picking fights wisely," but to observers, it appears they spend all their time predicting defeat and "saving their energy" for fights they can win. Outsiders looking in do not see "wise selection," they see cowardice. When the rare "winnable fight" does materialize, it is often for some incremental step or practical end that inspires no one.

. . .

Seattle Post Intelligencer
Democrats hope to reclaim key conservatives
By CHARLES POPE
P-I NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/287233_reagandems02...

. . .Rep. Brian Baird is another Washington Democrat whose district is streaked with Republican strongholds. Like Larsen, Baird senses uneasiness and frustration among voters that Democrats hope to exploit.

"I had a guy two weeks ago come up to me and tell me straight up -- Congressman, I'm a lifelong Republican. If the Democrats retake the House, will you impeach the president? I don't think that's the best use of time, and I started to say that. But before I could, he said, "If you do, you should.'". . .

Demanding impeachment is not just required by their oath; it is not just the RIGHT thing to do, it is the WINNING thing to do!

We are seeing more and more examples that confirm the fact that folks on the right, particularly white males, want to see SOMEBODY in power go after Bush. On Randi Rhodes awhile back, a Republican (male) who called in captured the sentiment when he said something to the effect of "Bush is like a teenager that never got spanked." These folks want to see him get "spanked.". . .

17. When the repugs "win" again, there is going to be little doubt it
was rigged. Maybe finally the public will get what
we have been trying to say.

While they have been napping, their country has been stolen.
