BUSH LIES ON ABC: "We've Never Been About Stay The Course"
Bush: ‘We’ve Never Been Stay The Course’

During an interview on ABC’s This Week, President Bush today tried to distance himself from what has been his core strategy in Iraq for the last three years. George Stephanopoulos asked about James Baker’s plan to develop a strategy for Iraq that is “between ’stay the course’ and ‘cut and run.’”

Bush responded, ‘We’ve never been about stay the course, George!’

VIDEO AND TRANSCRIPT
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/10/22/bush-stay-the-course/

Bush is wrong:

BUSH: We will stay the course. <8/30/06>

BUSH: We will stay the course, we will complete the job in Iraq. <8/4/05>

BUSH: We will stay the course until the job is done, Steve. And the temptation is to try to get the President or somebody to put a timetable on the definition of getting the job done. We’re just going to stay the course. <12/15/03>

BUSH: And my message today to those in Iraq is: We’ll stay the course. <4/13/04>

BUSH: And that’s why we’re going to stay the course in Iraq. And that’s why when we say something in Iraq, we’re going to do it. <4/16/04>

BUSH: And so we’ve got tough action in Iraq. But we will stay the course. <4/5/04>

As usual, these new-cowards-of-the-twenty-first-century sure love to fight their battles of words on a tee-vee screen because it requires no bravery and is easy, and as a cheap bonus, they can't suffer any real loss.

:puke: Their saint king george can never do wrong! :puke:

132. Heh, same here.
Check out the reply I got upon posting this elsewhere;

Apples & Oranges son.

Stay the course as in see it through. Not the 1/2 cut and run tactics of the left.

While the latter is simply stating that we're not inflexible in our tactics.

It's possible to see something to completion while changing tactics. Of course the left wouldn't realize that since the concept of seeing it through seems so foreign to them.

You leftys are really getting desparate to require such a cheap and obvious yet quite weak play on words.

I always thought laughter began with 'h' and not 'a' but hey this clown likes all the personal attack shit and none of the substance.

He also goes by the 'I am a veteran' therefore I am right and holds all the dittohead/FReeptard jingoisms.

I've argued with this kind of idiot before. They think they're winning, but are really making asses of themselves with personal attacks and idiotic statements with no experience nor substance.

6. Yet again bush shows his utter contempt for the US public's intelligence.
He thinks Americans (rightwingnuts, that is) are so stupid, he can fool them by denying he wasn't about "stay the course".

And rightwingnuts will allow themselves to be duped. Again.

Gotta really despise yourself to allow anyone to do to you what rightwingnuts allow bush to do to them.

with saying that. Why didn't he have clips of Bush saying, "Stay the course"? Or at the very least, why didn't he read a long series of Bush's own words back to him?

The Dems had better make a campaign ad stringing those clips together, interspersed with this clip of him as he claims he was "never about stay the course."

We all know the plan is to stall as long as possible to allow them to loot the treasury and relieve the Iraqis of their natural resources. Of course, they can't say that, so it's one puff of smoke after another.

It's just incredible that this guy and his handlers aren't competent enough to come up with a decent lie and stick to it. If you're attempting to fool someone, you can at least try to be smart about it.

How GS can sit there and not break up in hysterical laughter is beyond me. Just incredble...

201. I haven't seen anyone yet touch on the most astounding part of BushCo's lies
ever notice that when they lie, they are angry? Really angry?

Not just a matter of simply saying "We were never about 'stay the course'" or "We never said there were links between 9/11 and Saddam or Iraq".

They actually get mad when they say those things, as though only an idiot or someone with an anti-Bush agenda would even dream of suggesting those things.

Odd thing is, they spout these lies with anger, and the angrier they are, the bigger the lie they are telling.

29. They think they can create their own reality.
Which, as we know, actually worked out quite well for them in 2004. I think it used to work for them on multiple levels. Some people got confused and gave up listening. Other people actually believed the "new reality" and subscribed to it. Now it seems that the endless lies may be finally working against Bushco since more and more people seem to be waking up and not believing anything that they say.

63. Ha ha - absolutely true.
Once I visited an RW board to see the junk they were spewing. I couldn't resist logging on to dispute their idiocy on global warming. I reminded them that Bush actually came out and admitted (a few years ago) that indeed global warming may be real (I think he only said this because a Kyoto meeting was taking place), and the idiotic mindless response was, "Bush never said global warming DIDN'T exist." Thereafter I realized you just can't reason with such people. As I remember it I was swiftly booted from that board. Too bad, huh!

There's no end to the spin and mindlessness in the Republican way of thinking.

The Vice President, last night, expressed condolences to President Ciampi who arrived in Washington, yesterday. Getting back to the call, though, the two leaders reaffirmed their strong commitment to stay the course in Iraq

But it's important that we stay the course and finish the job -- and that's what the President has continued to say -- and let the Iraqi people know that we are going to stay the course,

We will stay the course, we will prevail, and they will be defeated.

And that's why it's important to continue to stay the course and prevail. And we will.

we need to tack on to the end of the lot -- after a pregnant pause -- the incredulous "We've never been about 'stay the course'." Fade to black, then overlay in big chunky type "What were we thinking?" Edit it to 30 seconds and get it on the air in all those 58 "winnable" districts, plus the three toss-up Senate states.

61. Don't Eat The Candy
My dad tells a story about WWII that seems to apply today. He used to go to the movies with his grandfather and before screening the movie they would show newsreels that discussed the war efforts. Essentially, they were propaganda pieces meant to encourage Americans that the war effort was going well. My dad’s grandfather, who had grown up in Italy and witnessed the trauma of war didn't like the newsreels. My dad says that his grandfather would ridicule the newsreels with his own sarcastic explanation of the war that went something like this. He would say that every American bullet would hit its target and kill the enemy, but that each time a German soldier shot his weapon, the bullets would fall harmlessly to the ground and the American soldiers would pick them up and eat them because they were candy.

It seems to me that many Americans may have reached the same point as my father’s grandfather with regards to the war on terror and the war in Iraq...the math just doesn't work and most voters have come to that conclusion. Regardless, we'll know for sure soon enough.

Edited on Sun Oct-22-06 10:36 AM by Zambero
Added to others such as "Bring 'em On", Mission Accomplished", "Major military operations in Iraq have ceased", and of course "Stay the course". It seems that each of these rhetorical pronouncements has gone way past the normal Karl Rovianesque shelf life. So to this administration, when policy becomes stale and ineffectual, simply backtrack and claim that the policy in question never really applied to begin with. Hannity, O'Reilly, Savage, Wallace et al will never call him on it anyway, so what's the problem with re-inventing reality every now and then?

Multiple video clips of him cussing, lying, and other general hatred (like the video snicker over not granting clemency to a condemned woman), all followed by quotes from the Bible that are orthogonal to his behavior.

It's time to use their Christofascist bullshit against themselves. Use Bible passages (which cannot be refuted by the base) to call out his anti-Xtian (true Xtian) behavior.

If KO (and anyone else please!) reports this Monday this will get play for two weeks - this week from the news, and next week from TDS and TCR.

I just cannot believe he actually said it. Does he really think people won't remember how many times he's said "stay the course"? Does he think our memories are wiped every day? Does he think at all?

To George W Bush: I laugh in your face, you are a joke of a chimpanzee, nevermind the usurper to the Presidency bent on demolishing our Constitution and our economic future for generations to come. Sad, really. How do you look at yourself in the mirror in the morning, Bushieboi, knowing that you brought so much harm down on so many people?

Quick, we need someone to commit him to the nearest mental institution (well Gitmo would serve him well). What a frigging liar. Either he truly believes he was never about "stay the course" which is either the result of serious medication or hypnotherapy or he's lying. I vote for the latter although he clearly is on something most of the time.

new and refined techniques.

I've long believed that tutoring, coaching, educating, and instructing him is an incredibly delicate and difficult chore.

I believe they face three major hurdles every minute of the day.

They must protect him because they lie to him. They tell him how great he is and how much he is loved since that is their only way to keep him off friendly consummables and because he needs love and rewards to survive life that is over the edge for him ... commensurate with his capabilities.

They must curb and control his ugly revenge nature. They must curb and control his awful jokes and physcial sniggers, shaking shoulders, and snears.

They must educate him enough to raise all that money and hold press conferences. They must educate him sufficiently to let him know a tiny bit beyond the title of a document he signs. I believe they clue him in on the strategies and dirty tricks, a little - because if the say too much, he'll one up them, then jump up and down to get it, because of that premise that the world and country loves him and that he really is the President.

So, to address the delicate diplomacy-undiplomacy and balance it with conviction and enthusiasm to keep him enthusiastic, they've got to be hypotizing him. Probably, with new techniques worked out by the CIA and their guinea pigs. It must involve a certain amount of mind cleansing.

95. Time to launch the Liar Campaign. From now on, EVERY TIME
Bush appears anywhere in public, he needs to be shouted out as a LIAR. That's all we need to do. Just drown the fucker out with shouts of, "Liar! Liar! Liar! Liar!" everywhere he goes. If it's a closed event where we can sneak protestors in we should do so, and they should shout him out in sequence. As soon as one protestor gets dragged away, the next one starts in, in preplanned sequence, so he has ABSOLUTELY NO OPPORTUNITY to be heard.

He is a pathological liar, and it is way past time to make sure he knows we know, and from this day forward never let him speak in public. DROWN THE FUCKER OUT. I, for one, have no further interest in anything that ever comes out of his mouth.

Cutting his toungue out would be the preferred treatment IMHO, but that's not currently feasible.

Chucklenuts is so full of donkey dung that it's finally oozing out of his ears. By the way, have you noticed that Bush accuses Dems of wanting any outcome but "victory", yet refuses to say what the hell "victory" is? I know what "victory" is: Sit down, shut up and stay the goddam course. Although, he now claims that "that's not we're all about." I've finally figured out their policy -- Their policy is whatever Monkey just now told you it was. Of course, he'll say that he's just listening to the commanders in the field....when they agree with him of course.

Before KKKarl Rove can whip out an "October Surprise", we need one of our own. Dems need to gather on the Capitol steps at midnight and demand that this man of such high morals and supposedly Godlike character stop blaming others for steering the ship of state aground and take responsibility for coming up with the plan he accuses others of not having. When Clinton lied, no one died.

Just as with every other administration policy, they'll announce big changes on Iraq, then say that they had planned to make changes all along, then do one more flip-flop and say that they don't have to make any of the changes they agreed to. Of course, we also keep hearing from O'Leilly and the Fatass Drug Addict that the "liberal" media (which never really has questioned the administration's assertions) is "causing us to lose," however, at the same time, we're told that things in Iraq are actually going fabulously, only it's not being reported. Which is it? If my mission is to empty the ocean with a teaspoon, and four years later, the job has not been completed, do I stay the course? And if a crowd of bystanders points out that I'm not achieving my goal and that I'm an idiot, do those people "hate America" and "want me to fail?"

The Ministry of Truth was involved with news, entertainment and the fine arts. Its purpose was to rewrite history and change the facts to fit party doctrine, for Propaganda effect. For example, if Big Brother (BB) made a prediction that turned out to be wrong, the employees of the Ministry of Truth would go back and rewrite history so that any prediction BB made would be accurate.

As his college professor recalls about young George Junior: ""He showed pathological lying habits and was in denial when challenged on his prejudices and biases. When asked to explain a particular comment, said Tsurumi, Bush would respond, "Oh, I never said that."

I happen to know that from sad personal experience.

"He would even deny saying something he just said 30 seconds ago. He was famous for that. Students jumped on him; I challenged him."

I think it's kind of a conditioned reflex, a protective mechanism. Crackheads will lie for NO apparent reason, and they will also deny saying something to the very person who HEARD them saying it, just like they will deny doing something to the person who actually witnessed them doing it.

What I don't understand is how Bush expects to get away with this crap on the world stage. After all, now there's an audiovisual record of every one of his public statements. At least when he was in college nobody was recording his lies.

180. Media Matters article and video clip here
Stephanopoulos left unchallenged Bush's revisionist history on "stay the course," Woodward books

Summary: In his interview with President Bush, ABC's George Stephanopoulos did not challenge Bush on several statements that directly contradict previous statements and actions, including when Bush asserted that his administration has "never been stay the course" in Iraq.

In the portion of his interview with President Bush broadcast on the October 22 edition of ABC's This Week, host George Stephanopoulos let go without challenge several statements from Bush that contradict previous statements and actions. First, as the weblog Think Progress noted, Bush asserted that his administration has "never been stay the course" in Iraq, a statement to which Stephanopoulos could have responded -- but didn't -- by noting that Bush and other senior administration officials have repeatedly described the U.S. policy in Iraq as "stay the course." Bush began articulating his strategy for Iraq as "stay the course" shortly after the war began in March 2003 and has persisted until very recently, as Think Progress noted, and Media Matters for America has also documented.

181. two possibilities
I just spent 20 minutes searching MSM news for this story... you could hear crickets chirping

other that the DU and similar sites -- there is absolutely nothing about this

so how are the bushies going to handle it? 2 possibilites:

1. ignore/squash it (seems to be the plan so far)
2. brush it off as a 'mis-speak' - most probably IF any reporter asks

He's never been under oath. Never shared his blow. Never soiled a blue dress.

Soiled a few underage Mexican prostitutes sure, but...

Isn't the entire Republican strategy to so muddy the waters that we no longer can tell or even care if they are lying?

the time, non stop. You nailed it beautifully, in a few devastating citations. You're the best!!!

They call election fraud researchers "spreadsheet wielding conspiracy theorists." (and what major crime doesn't involve a consnpiracy)

I'm calling you "a search program wielding reality theorist."

You peel away the veneer of humanity and expose this administration for what it is:

182. we're going to have to "STAY THE COURSE" on this
I just spent over 1/2 hours running searches on MSM sites for the story - not one has picked up. Other than DU and a few similar sites - the crickets are chirping...

I'm urging you to send the story around to any place you can find -- if we want this story to hit the 6 o'clock news and crawlers - we're going to have to make this happen...

to make it easier - post links/e-mail address of who you contacted so others may also contact them here:

Powell: ‘Staying the Course Isn’t Good Enough Because a Course Has to Have an End’
In a speech at the University of Minnesota yesterday, former Secretary of State Colin Powell blasted the Bush administration’s “stay the course” policy in Iraq:

(fights with Colin Powell over "stay the course")

But kpete can stay the course though, no arguments there!

196. here comes the spin -- if you can stomach it..

http://1fp.us/2006/10/22/the-sunday-morning-talk-shows-the-review/

--snip--

Bush said that he wasn’t going to “cut and run,” but that he would constantly adjust his strategy. Steph interjected that James Baker was looking for a middle ground between “cut and run and stay the course.” The President replied: “Listen, we’ve never been ’stay the course,’ George.” The President said that he is for “completing the mission.” This, then, is his definition of the old “stay the course” phrase.

197. College professor: on W pathological liar

"He showed pathological lying habits and was in denial when challenged on his prejudices and biases. He would even deny saying something he just said 30 seconds ago. He was famous for that. Students jumped on him; I challenged him." When asked to explain a particular comment, said Tsurumi, Bush would respond, "Oh, I never said that."

Maybe even Bush got tired of hearing Stay The Course. I know about 60% of America has.

This guy has the attention span of a flea, a sieve for a memory, and English is a second language. He didn't have any ideas to begin with, and the few he had were bad. The POTUS has no game left to play.
