...the Pentagon & Joint Chiefs of Staff have to stand up to Bush and the NeoCons, threaten to go public with how bad things really are. Next there has to be cessation of building the 'permanent' military bases. There needs to be a public pronouncement that we are redeploying our troops within the next year but that we will support political talks among the parties to resolve their differences. Then we need to gradually begin reducing the number of troops on the ground in Iraq.
It essentially means that we have to reject the NeoCon agenda, give up control of the Iraqi oil fields, and embrace diplomacy as the only means of ending the fighting.
If the Sunni and Shia are intent on fighting each other to the death, there is nothing we can do to stop them except stand in the crossfire while they do it. If we take ourselves out of the equation, there is a chance they will reach a cease fire and some kind of workable solution.
IF the above is not our plan, just what are we doing there? ARe we really prepared to bankrupt this country to stay for the next 10-20 years? Will we have any influence on any other country(ie. N.Korea)if we are bogged down in Iraq?
