Bush chides father for election remarks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush gently admonished his father for saying he hates to think what life would be like for his son if the Democrats win control of Congress in the November 7 election.

It was the latest sign of possible strain in the relationship between the two men.

"He shouldn't be speculating like this, because -- he should have called me ahead of time and I'd tell him they're not going to (win)," a smiling Bush told ABC "This Week" in an interview broadcast on Sunday.

It follows the recent release of a book, "State of Denial," by journalist Bob Woodward, that says the 82-year-old former president was "anguished" over how the Iraq war has played out, although he has dismissed that account.

2. For the first time in his life
Dubya is not touting his ties to his father. Leaning on the family name in order to rise to the conservative voters, he runs a risk of blowing off his father's supporters, or becoming one of the hard right's parrots.

I guess his father was convenient once upon a time, but not now. Now, Junior will say, or do, whatever will enhance his standard as repuke endorsed follower.

This is exactly the sort of thing GW Bush would say if he knew the elections were rigged. He wouldn't hide it. He'd rub it everyone's face and smirk.

4. It could be an attempt to shore up the base....
...or it could be a signal that the fix is in. Either way, the President's father openly worrying about a Democratic Congress for Georgie is a good sign to me, regardless of what Junior has to say.

They can only win IMO, if its close enough to steal. Unfortunately,the senate races in Tennessee, Missouri and Virginia are.

16. What's this mythical "close enough to steal" thingie?
How do you know what's close anf what's not if th real count is unknown to you? In 2002 they flopped the poll results in a fer states (Georgia, Texas, Florida)

7. I presume you are remembering the strange, unsettling calm
that marked the criminal enterprise on election night, 2000? That floats around in my brain, unbidden, when I hear this oft-repeated story.

The fix probably is in but I suspect there are going to be so many challenged claims and demands for recounts that the sort of routine mechanical fraud that this crowd has proven itself capable of may be too chancy to pull off this time.
With the heightened sensitivity coming from both sides this time, the chance of discovery of hacking the vote is probably pretty high. The tools of choice this time will probably be more focused on the tried and true tricks of voter disenfranchisement, intimidation, and deception.

6. George Sr. must be worried sick that his son
will have a complete mental breakdown if he loses his grip on Congress. I believe he has reason to worry if this should happen, considering speculation by some that Bush Jr. is suffering from the effects to the brain caused by years of extreme alcohol abuse.
