Time to rethink Japan's nuclear status

Charles Krauthammer, a syndicated columnist based in Washington: Washington Post Writers Group
Published October 23, 2006

<snip>Japan's response to the North Korean threat has been very strong and very insistent on serious sanctions. This is, of course, out of self-interest, not altruism. But that is the point. Japan's natural interests parallel America's in the Pacific Rim: maintaining military and political stability, peacefully containing an inexorably expanding China, opposing the gangster regime in Pyongyang, and spreading the liberal democratic model throughout Asia. Why are we so intent on denying this stable, reliable democratic ally the means to help us shoulder the burden in a world where so many other allies--the inveterately appeasing South Koreans most notoriously--insist on the free ride?

1. It would only be fair
After all, the US to has nukes and does preemptively attack nations.

2. With the criminal leadership we have allowed to be installed in the USA.
We should be the first to be disarmed.

The USA is one of the most insane countries, and we have enough nukes to destroy all life on the planet.

3. Being fair does not mean we have to sign a suicide pact

Japan preemptively attacked the USA. The USA responded by turning two of their cities into ashes. They might feel like they owe us a little something after what we did to Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Couldn't hardly blame them if they did even with their militaristic past. I am not so sure that the Japanese people have completely forgiven us for that either? But lets don't go down this road again if possible. Japan is the last country in the world I would want to possess nuclear weapons.

4. I think it is unreasonable to expect other nations to accept US
self-ascribed authority to decide who gets to use which weapons. The only "right" that the US has in this is its "might" - but that's not a rational argument.

5. Did anyone notice that the Japanese have never acknowledged
their crimes from WWII? Every few months there is a diplomatic upset between China and Japan because Japanese text books still depict Japan as the victim.
