Schlesinger is pissed with the GOP and vows to fight
Schlesinger bets it all
Angered by the national GOP's support for Joe Lieberman, the real Republican in the Connecticut Senate race goes on the attack.

The Republican candidate for U.S. Senate from Connecticut feels like a papier-mâché punching bag, he says, because of the abuse he has taken from the media and his own party. The press has often acted as if he did not exist and the GOP leadership has treated him like a bombastic nut with no chance of winning.

Schlesinger is running against Democrat Ned Lamont and Democrat-turned-independent Joe Lieberman, the incumbent. Schlesinger gets angry sometimes, he says, when he thinks about the way President Bush "basically gave a wink and a nod for the big money to go out and support Lieberman." He also got angry when the state party publicly called on him to withdraw from the race over allegations of erratic behavior at our nation's fine gambling establishments. "I was thrown under the bus," he gripes. "That's what made fundraising so difficult."

And he gets mad at the media, which has been covering something it calls "the Lieberman-Lamont race," usually because it's just too exhausting to type in a long third name with three syllables for a candidate pulling about 3 percent in the polls.

But that 3 percent was before last week, back in the day when nobody interviewed Schlesinger or wrote about him, and he had no money for TV commercials, which are the modern Cartesian proof of political existence. I buy TV time, therefore I am.

Last week, a funny thing happened. He debated Lamont and Lieberman. Schlesinger, who debates the two front-runners again Monday evening, likes to call this new phase of his campaign "The Piñata Strikes Back."

1. Clinton also gave a wink and nod to democrats when he said
that it is a "win-win" for democrats if either Lamont or Lieberman win.

2. Little late for a "new phase"
of a camapign. But knock yourself out, Schlesinger.

This guy is poison to the GOP and that's why he's at 3 %. It isn't about the lack of funds, it's about his character. He is a bombastic nut with no chance of winning. One thing the GOP is right about in this election.

we'd be better off with Liarman than Schlesinger, (if, heaven forbid, Lamont doesn't win), but darn if I don't have more respect for Schlesinger...

He is admittedly and proudly a Repug and typically predictable... Liarman, on the other hand is just a self-serving back stabber and opportunist...

unlike Lieberman, Schlesinger is at least an honest whore.

12. Exactly...
Maybe splitting hairs, but if there is honesty among "thieves," I'd tend to gravitate to the "honest" one...

Unfortunately, we may be stuck supporting the very dishonest Liarman, if Schlesinger doesn't start cutting into his lead...

6. Dems should be giving him money for commercials
He won't take a vote from Lamont, but he could hurt Lieberman badly.

Why not pay for him to run ads pointing out that Lieberman supports abortion, labor, and all the other liberal things Lieberman once claimed to support? Make a few Republicans upset about voting for him.

Our best hope for the Senate from Tennessee-- the charismatic Harold Ford, JR--came out in support of Liarman recently...

14. Temptation is just too great for some.

One of the disadvantages of being elected to office and not being independently wealthy.

Money is just a gateway drug to power.

But then there is the Spartan archetype who is impossible to get to, regardless of the level of temptation and refuses to act rationally even when presented with an offer otherwise impossible to refuse.

16. Aren't there some wealthy Democrats
who could slip him a few bucks? Repiglicans are giving Liarman money and it's not uncommon for repigs to fund independents so that the potential vote for Democrats is split. What's good for the goose.......... as they say.
