Keeping eye out for cops won't do

So you're driving down U.S. 287, cruising 80 in a 70 mph zone through Rhome.

Your radar detector isn't making a beep -- it appears to be a ticket-free trip.

A few days later, however, a letter from Nestor Traffic Systems in Rhode Island arrives with pictures of you and your vehicle. There's also a speeding ticket tucked inside.

Such a scenario may soon be played out.

Rhome city officials are negotiating a contract with Nestor to use a scanning-lidar camera to monitor speeders on highways, city streets and in school zones. "Lidar" is short for "light detection and ranging."

1. Right, And We All Know That Nobody Ever Speeds
Add this to the list of things you have to be aware of, along with those wonderful cameras at intersections.

The agencies really need to keep that money rolling in, and cops can't actually be at donut shops and putting up speed traps, so this is the solution.

12. I think here in TN too
On our new car tags have these bar code number(s) on them and I believe it's for speeders too.

I usually speed, but only in long straight sections where it is safe, and only when conditions permit, I also go between 0-10 over.

And you know what?

I get passed. All the time.


I wonder if these video speed traps will be able to catch everyone, or just random people?



Problem is, though, that this will congest traffic more and might cause potential for more accidents

9. I wish that would be possible here where I live.
I read once that owning and operating an automobile cost on average a little over 6 thousands bucks a year. lots of change

15. One DWI will cost you that much.
As a dedicated hell-raiser, I quit driving some years ago while living north of Houston.

What did it was me filling up my gas tank in freezing rain.

I now live in a place where everything that I need is within a ten minute walk. And we have no gas stations, anyway.

13. Sorry. Driving while black and Driving while Muslim. We have a lot of incidents like that here in
North Jersey especially in the more "classy" neighborhoods.

19. Heh...that's practically like a game with me and my friends.
When we see somebody pulled over, it's always like, "Hey, I bet it's another DWB!" Unfortunately, we're usually right. Although I must admit within Rockaway Twp, they're also a fan of DWUT (Driving While Under Thirty).

I'd like to see them limit this to high accident areas and highly publicize it and have a lot of signage around about you being watched. Around my neck of the woods they've started using this at really dangerous intersections and the "beat the light" crowd has almost completely quit. Accidents are WAY down. I know cities and counties are using these as income producers but if it actually does help stop accidents by slowing people down then it would be worth it. IMHO

to catch red light runners. I know, because I got a ticket in the mail.

17. I would rather the police spend their money on hiring more cops
No camera system can replace a good cop. We need cops for public safety, think how many times they catch someone for DWI or something just by pulling them over for something like speeding. That saves lives.

18. I think having both is a good thing. I agree with the above poster,
there are caameras citingred light runners all over Atlanta, and I don't think it's practical to have a cop at EVERY red light! Running red lights seems to be a passtime in the Atlanta area. I sure never saw so much of it anywhere else we've lived. I doubt it will take more than one or two tickets to convince people it's just not worth doing it!

I don't remember anythign in there about driving or the "right" to not be held accountable for breaking the law. What part of the Bill of rights says automated tickets are bad but tickets written by a police officer are OK? - or do you think all accountability while driving is against the bill of rights?

Educate me.
