Kansas GOP congressman Jim Ryun caught lying about Mark Foley
Kansas GOP congressman Jim Ryun caught lying about Mark Foley, child sex predator

It's not good when a sitting member of Congress is caught lying about one of the biggest scandals to hit Washington in decades. Especially when that scandal involves young children put at risk through the negligence, or willful deceit, of that member of Congress's own party.

Ryun's story on Foley changes
Manager: Congressman has always known who lived across street

Worried about winning a sixth term in Congress, U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun said this month he didn't know until recently that he lived across the street from disgraced Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla. -- whom many Republicans are trying to keep at a safe distance.

Then, when faced with questions about how that could be the case considering Ryun in May hosted a fundraiser alongside Foley on D Street in Washington, D.C., Ryun's campaign said the events weren't jointly planned.

However, neither of those statements was completely accurate, Ryun's campaign admitted last week.

8. Jim Ryun was my idol in high school
I was a distance runner too, and really looked up to him.

Oh well. My other big HS track idol ended up in jail for some scandal (non-political) :(

3. Ryun's Involved in The Wade Mess, Too
I don't know if its this townhouse or another, but Ryun got a sweetheart deal on some prime real estate that was owned by Mitchell Wade and his merry band of pork barrellers. Supposedly this was being investigated (with so much more), and Ryun's been able to skate.

Hopefully someone will see this story and wonder about that townhouse lease of Ryun's and starts asking some real embarassing questions.

6. Support Nancy Boyda!!!
Ryun may be in trouble in this race. Dem opponent Nancy Boyda is making this a competitive race. The Republican Party is really screwed up in Kansas. Their radical, theocratic politics is losing them people. Democrats will be benefitting from this chaos. Tiahrt (KS-4) is a total lunatic. I only wish that he'd find his race as a tough one.

Still a dark horse race, a little extra support for Boyda could turn things around.

7. Ryun's daughter - Abramoff connection
In May, the Secret Service released partial data showing two White House visits by Abramoff. In a letter faxed to Judicial Watch yesterday, a Justice Department lawyer said that the Secret Service had recently learned of other visits when it "unexpectedly discovered computer files" containing entry and exit logs on the visits.

In one of the previously disclosed visits -- March 6, 2001 -- Abramoff met with presidential adviser Karl Rove in an unsuccessful effort to have two allies placed in Interior Department jobs. That visit appears to have been the only one with a senior official.

The new data, combined with the two visits disclosed in May, show that Abramoff had appointments to attend White House events or meetings on seven occasions -- six in 2001 and a seventh in January 2004, on Inauguration Day. The Secret Service said the data reflect appointments but "do not necessarily reflect actual visits to the White House complex."

Among those with whom Abramoff met in the spring of 2001 was Cesar Conda, then assistant to the vice president for domestic policy, and Catharine Ryun, executive assistant to the director of the faith-based office and daughter of Rep. Jim Ryun (R-Kan.).
