Poll question: How Many Here Feel Ted Kennedy is a DLC type Democrat?
I am being told on another thread that Ted Kennedy is a DLC type and "...he is not liked by the progressive wing of the Democratic party" for "not seeing Stevenson get the Democratic nomination for a third time".

Maybe it's just me, but I'm really surprised to see this on DU. Honestly, I had no idea he was disliked by Progressives nor did I ever know he was a DLC type and I live in Massachusetts.

14. I Admit to Being Uniformed...
that's why I posted this poll. I was puzzled by what I read on another thread and since nobody said anything to counter what was said in that thread, I wanted to get everyone's opinion and hopefully some facts.

17. But you would've never ventured such an absurd claim as those who did.
Big difference.

Being uninformed is what one seeks to correct, as you do. Being uniformed and making stupid claims out of that ignorance is a whole other category - malicious ignorance.

6. "not letting Stevenson get the nomination a third time!" that's 1960
and his brother was running for president. Does that poster honestly think that Ted Kennedy would have supported Adlai Stevenson over his own brother? Ted Kennedy is one of the most progressive voices in the US Senate for heavens sake--the DLC doesn't have time for him.

12. he's talking about Jack Kennedy not Ted Kennedy
and Ted is a lot more liberal (and a much more effective senator) than JFK ever was. By the way, yes, in 1960 the ADA wanted Stevenson more than JFK.

24. Yeah, that's JFK
Who by standards at that time was a much more conservative Dem, and was even the compromise candidate of 1960. The left really wanted Stevenson again but settled for JFK. Though JFK (and esp later LBJ both sans the war of course) surprised progressives with just how liberal their domestic policies were.

I wasn't around in 1960, so it's hard for me to evaluate some of these politicians from that era. I find it hard to fault Kennedy for his hard line against the USSR when Kruschev was in power, and in relation to others of his day I really don't think he's as conservative as some like to remember. But again, I wasn't here then. :)

Kennedy DLC because he opposed Stevenson's third nomination in favor of- wait for it- his BROTHER? Uh yeah, it was Adlai's liberalness which made Teddy oppose him alright.

11. Ah, the person who told you this is full of crap.
Teddy wasn't the Senator of influence from Massachusetts when Adlai Stevenson ran again. That would hav been Teddy's, apparently, lesser known brother John F. Kennedy. Ah, Teddy was the baby of the family and had no pull whatsoever on Stevenson in '60.

Ahm, Teddy is 73 years old today. Tell them to do the math. Also, he didn't get to the Senate until 1962.
