Poll question: Does Democratic Underground need a name change?
When this website was founded, it was done so as a forum to protest GWB, his administration, and all things Republican. It grew from a small, but vocal population of lefties, and has since grown to nearly 100,000 people of many beliefs and nationalities.

That, my friends, is not an "Underground" movement, but an uprising. That is a population nearly the size of Alexandria, Virginia; over twice the size of Olympia, Washington; and over 1/6th the population of Washington, DC proper.

Personally, I would like to see this place change its name to something that shows the RW that we're coming for them. Something like Democrats Rising or some other name that captures the strength of our numbers (which is growing, not only on DU), our fierce determination to get this country back on track, and our mission to retake the good name of this country from those who have dragged it through hell these past 6 years.

So, whatcha think? Is a name-change in order?

3. Democratic Alexandria!
The country went through hell and all I got was this lousy website!

Nah, that's too harsh. Plus this website isn't lousy

Democrats Anonymous.

Democrats United Can Never be Divided

I like Democratic Alexandria the best - but I've always like that name.

5. No
Although I can agree with your logic, lets never forget where we came from.
Lets not forget that we were FORCED into the 'underground' when they stole the 2000 election and where they would relegate us to permanently if they could.

6. Since so many posters aren't even Democrats
it should called "Progressive" or "Liberal" something.

Trolls get on these boards deliberately to take advantage of the site's name; they'll post nonsense here, which they later repost on RW boards, to use as phony "evidence" of "un-American", "wacko" Democrats.

9. 100k is not necessarily correct..
that is just the registered folks and some of them were freepers or one or two timers. How any of those registered are actually still active? Also, does that include the ones that have been tomb-stoned?

Keep the name for now. I like the subversive - underground - part.

10. Why change?
after all, it's still fairly underground, meaning a lot of opinions that are tolerated here are not the official opinions of choreographed candidates.

Mine certainly fit that description.

I don't think anyone who reads these message boards can possibly think we are not gunning for the thieves, lunatics, and ideological nutjobs who have taken over the opposition party, no matter what our divergent views may be.

On that account, I think we speak in unison.

11. Call it DU2
"Underground" is cool to older people, but sounds like a sewer to young people.

DU2 is short and textable.

Nearly 100,000 registrations doesn't mean there are nearly 100,000 members.
DU is still an underground movement. Even if it wasn't, it's good to remember where you started.

14. The name change would have start up consequences
but I was wondering if maybe the recommendation total to go to the greatest page shouldn't be raised to ten.

Five is fairly low. But it still rates as a "greatest." If the rec total was raised to ten, the greatest page would have more posts that would have proved popular interest and in my opinion, would improve it.

22. "Democratic"
sounds like too political, and the whole "Underground" thing just sounds dark and dirty.

We need something more uplifting, a feeling of freedom, yes, that's it "Free"...

coupled with something that sounds noble, ancient yet modern at the time..."Republic"...

Yes, that's it.

"Democratic Underground" is a great name for this website. If the name is changed then the website would change. Might as well start another website like Progressive Independent, Democratic Warrior, Unfiltered News Network, Old American Century.org... oh yeah. Silly me, those names are already taken, and are populated by hundreds of DUers.

"Democratic Uprising" sounds good to me. Although, it might become a linking nightmare for some, and then there's the advertisers to consider...yadda...yadda...yadda.

Change is not only good, it's impossible to avoid.
