Bush nominates S. Salem woman for ambassador to Hungary position

LEWISBORO — President Bush has nominated South Salem resident April H. Foley to become the U.S. ambassador to Hungary.
The president announced this week that he had selected Foley, who is the former first vice president and vice chairwoman of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, which helps finance exports of U.S. goods to foreign countries.

Foley became a bank board member in 2003 and later served as its first vice president and vice chairman until July 20 last year. Before her tenure at the bank, Foley worked for 17 years for Purchase-based PepsiCo, where she was the director of business planning and corporate strategy. In the mid-1990s, she also served as director of strategy for the Reader's Digest Association in New Castle.

Some press reports have stated that Foley dated President Bush while the two were at Harvard.
Before the announcement, Conservative Chicago Sun-Times columnist Robert Novak wrote that Bush "frustrated in efforts to make ex-girlfriend April Foley the head of the Export-Import Bank" decided to name her to the ambassador post without publicizing it.As if the Hungarians haven't had enough to deal with in their recent history...
