the working class, the proletarians.

There was a post today saying that the proles are being used to fight our wars by the elitists in the U.S.. Posters didn't know who the "proles" were.

1. Orwell shortened it to proles in 1984.

2. Now you need to explain you mean the BOOK, 1984, not the year
which is a sad reflection on the quality of US education.

4. "Proletariat" means
those people whose only possession is their "prole" = sons and daughters.

11. Yes, the breed cows and bulls
That labour is sooo discounted, its only value is in raising 'sons and daughters' in poverty, as
so many many children are indeed raised.

5. Prole?
Most DUers probably qualify as proles, not so much in the low education sense depicted in "1984, but in the work your butt off until you die just to stay afloat sense.

6. I don't know that I necessarily agree with that.......
and MOST IMPORTANTLY, it's not about how much MONEY you have, it's all about CHARACTER, INTEGRITY, STRENGTH OF CHARACTER, etc. You know, "things that money can't buy"......those things that LAST!.

Money or not....most DU'ers seem to possess the BEST of those long-lasting traits. That's why they're here, and that's why I'm here

The meek shall inherit the earth....I think Dems should "go for it".....and we won't try to CONQUER the earth, we'll work diligently to live in harmony with it (b/c the Earth is much much more wise/long-lasting than it's stoopid human inhabitants!)

Peace,
M_Y_H

7. I made no character assessments
I was merely speaking of the economic situation many of us face. We can have all of the character in the world (and I agree most DUers have a boatload of character) but that's not going to keep a roof over our heads, heat to keep us from freezing to death, clothing on our bodies, medication, food, etc.

8. I have struggled with those very things myself......
I know what it's like to have my gas (heat) turned off b/c I didn't have the money to pay my bill when they wanted their money.... and I know what it feels like to receive an 'acceleration' notice on my mortgage, etc. (btw, I'm still here with my heat and my home w/mortgage.....just went through some 'interesting times' a few years back)

We're fighting something much, much bigger.

Does anyone dream of having their own business someday???? Bet you don't hear that from any/many of the 20-30-somethings anymore, do you. It was quite common 20+ years back. You don't hear it? Why not? Because in this 'day-and-age' (the age of Walmart) .... and independent business owner can't compete. QUALITY doesn't mean anything anymore, because (enough) people don't care about QUALITY anymore; Heck, most people are too young to have ever known that there was ever something BETTER!

Sorry, I'm going off like an "old geezer" who's still in my 40's.

Anyway, these past 6 years (under the *selected* ~not elected~ shrub regime have been a "real trip" (read: nightmare). I hope that the upper 1% will be able to see that b/c of things like the MCA (Military Commission Act) and the Patriot Act that they (the upper 1% are a 'first target').....hey, you've got the most to steal from now. Thanks for putting us in power ;-)

9. I've been there too
Taking frigid showers and eating only food that could be microwaved or eaten raw for several months because my gas got cut off. And once upon a time I flirted with the idea of running my own bookstore but I know that could never happen.

Now I just work my two jobs where I know I'm incredibly expendable regardless of how well I do my work and how many years of service I have in. I just keep hoping things will hold out until I get my graduate degree (whenever that may be) and I get a better job. If things go on as they have been, that could be a looooong time from now.
