"Joint U.S.-Iraqi plot underway to oust PM Maliki"??
Though I don't trust UPI this sounds very possible....

As the debate over the American President’s policies in Iraq continues, amidst speculations whether the surging violence in Iraq will affect U.S.’s Nov. 7 congressional elections, the U.S. government seems looking for alternatives to fix the current chaos it created in Iraq.

Citing Cairo-based Iraqi and Arab sources, United Press International revealed earlier this week that Iraqi army officers with the help of the U.S. are plotting to oust Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

The report shed light on secret meetings that took place in Washington recently between Iraqi military officers and Bush’s administration officials during which they discussed plans to oust Maliki's government and replace it by a "national salvation" government so as to bring security and stability in Iraq.

UPI quoted one source as saying that talks between the Iraqi military officers, including the deputy chief of staff, a Muslim Shia, the intelligence chief, a Sunni, and the commander of the air force, a Kurd, and U.S. officials were aimed at coordinating the military coup in case Maliki's recently proposed plans to restore stability to the country fail to achieve their intended goals.

1. Ha!
We're going to oust or own goddamn puppet government? Priceless. This has got to be some kind of weird terminal point for the neoconservative ideology.

and the decision to strike at Sadr City.

Maliki: "It will not be repeated."

7. Any replacement who has our fingerprints all over him
is not going to fare any better. They are going to have to do their "secret" stuff a little more carefully. I mean, if we can see it here, so can everybody else.

Just toss him out the front door of the heavily guarded green zone where he lives and we are currently protecting him and let nature take its course.

9. Robert Dreyfuss has been writing about this in his blog
Here's links to updates, the text of his first article is below:

Coup in Iraq?

I've got an analytical piece going up at TomPaine.com tomorrow about the Bush administration's loss of confidence in Prime Minister Maliki of Iraq, and it raises the question: Is the administration thinking about trying to "fix" Iraq by encouraging a coup d'etat by Iraq's armed forces?

Since then I had a conversation with a former CIA official with wide experience in the Middle East. Here's his take:

It's being talked about in Washington. One scenario is, the Iraqis do it themselves, some Iraqi colonel who's fed up with the whole thing, who takes over the country. And it would take the United States 48 hours to figure out how to respond, and meanwhile he's taken over everything.

The other side of the coin is, we do it ourselves, find some general up in Ramadi or somewhere, and help him take over. And he'd declare a state of emergency, and crack down. And he'd ask us to leave -- that would be our exit strategy. It's a distinct possibility. I've raised this with a number of foreign service and intelligence people, and most of them -- remembering the days of the coups d'etat in the Middle East -- say, "Hear, hear!"

And you know what? I think Rumseld would jump on this idea in five minutes.

11. Wouldn't surprise me, now that JB III has his nose in the mess ...
... I'm sure the BFEE/Carlyle Group has a Saddam-like character in mind they can install to run the country as they see fit, until he gets too comfortable and, well ... dictator-like and then we'll have to go back and "liberate" Iraq again in 15 or 20 years ....

:eyes: Why won't people wake up to WTF this group of thugs does to other countries??
