Subject: Writings on the Wall
Not like Ike
didn’t warn us –
Eisenhower,
man of the hour
for telling us
to be wary of the
military, the
dreaded military-
industrial com-
plex & just what
to expect from
its deadly hex.
Not like Ike
didn’t tell us to
steer clear of
war profiteers
who’d sell us
on destruction
and death –
on war– all too
plainly insane.
War for freedom
of imperial gain.
Then too Mark’s
remarks are pain-
fully plain: Mark
Twain warned us
again and again
about dangers of
imperial greed,
greed that would
mislead America,
greed parading in
mad flag-wrapped
patriotism – that
bravery of old
knaves sending
young men to
early graves.
Next comes Dylan
w/ lines fiercely
piercing and clear
about masters of
war– the mongers
of fear – the war-
makers, life-takers–
bastards to the core.
Is their blood-money
all that good? And do
they think that it could
buy back their souls –
their hearts hard & cold?
Comes a day they will
pay, and may it come
none too soon when
they know the pain &
the sorrow they have
birthed on earth– the
hardship & suffering
they have unleashed in
hell-bent violence &
death on that wrathful
path of destruction,
of war for more & more.
