Justice Clarence Thomas Compliments ACLU (surprise!)
Edited on Fri Oct-27-06 08:03 AM by Cheney Killed Bambi
I thought this was pretty surprising. Clarence Thomas gave a speech in Atlanta where he complimented the ACLU

U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas told an Atlanta audience Thursday "I am finally home."

"Thirty-two years ago, I tried desperately to come to Atlanta," Thomas said. Unable to find a job there after graduating from Yale Law School, he took a job in the Missouri attorney general's office.

<snip>

On amicus briefs: "They range from useless to extremely useful; from credible to 'You've got to be kidding me,'" Thomas said. The most helpful, he said, are those filed by "honest brokers ... who don't take either side" or groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union whose legal credibility, Thomas said, is well established. "You know, I'm not one who gloms on to the ACLU’s arguments," he said. But, he added, "They are pretty principled about the positions they take, and they're well-informed and pretty helpful."

That's good to hear. At least he's reading the briefs. Hopefully he'll be more likely to adopt their positions in future cases.

4. He was pretty hostile to a recent supreme court decision
about property rights. He called gentrification "Negro removal".

5. One of those stories which never seem to show up on the freeper boards
They're too busy screaming that the ACLU is trying to sandblast religious symbols from tombstones and defending baby rapers. But the, reality has never been the freepers' strong suite.

11. I think it's
a good way to convince freepers that the ACLU is intellectually honest. Throw Thomas's quote in their face.

6. Wow, he's capable of independent thoughts?
I daresay that Scalia's opinion of the ACLU would differ.

7. I was in a discussion with a winger a couple of days ago about Habeas Corpus
and the GOP doing away with it. The winger said it will never stand because the ACLU will take it to Supreme Court. I told him I was under the impression wing nuts hated the ACLU and he said no only some of the things they defended. I said like Constitutional rights. He shrugged and said some things were just too offensive to be defended, I said like Segregation for instance. He shut up because he is quite the bigot. I felt it was a win win situation for the Constitution and zero for wing nuts. He also said he thought there needs to be a change in government, a breath of fresh air, as he put it. Then he said they are all corrupt and need to be sent packing. I said usually corruption follows those with power and only the GOP has power so it is pretty damn hard to place the corruption charge on Democrats. I said maybe in a few years after Democrats have had control for a while we will find them guilty of corruption but for now it is all in the GOP's circle and he agreed. Amazing to say the least because he has always been extremely hard right wing...

8. Pick myself up off the floor!
Clarence actually said something intelligent and true????

OMG.....the end times must be here! :sarcasm:

Ummmmm....don't expect him to voice that opinion in oral arguments, however. Unless things have changed in the recent past, dear ol' Clarence has NEVER asked a question during oral arugment on any case!
