oddest interview. He is Deputy Director of Defense. And he was out spouting the party line.

But it was so odd. Here we have a country (Iraq) collapsing into civil war. Thousands and thousands of Iraqis dead. About 100 dying a day over there. And over 2,800 soldiers dead. And 44,779 wounded.

And he might have been describing a game played in someone's parlor by gentlemen sitting in front of the fire drinking brandy. There was absolutely no emotion, no sense of urgency, no real sense of anything. And absolutely no sense of reality. Bush and Maliki are getting on just fine. There are a few problems but they are just working those out. It really was unbelievable. And kind of totally insane.

1. I felt the same way about Rumsfeld.
His "caring news conference compassionate conservatism" is just a coverup for a cold-hearted bastard.

4. I know. I don't think any of those guys ever give a second thought
to the fact that they are directly responisble for the deaths of thousands and thousands of innocent people. It is wierd.

5. The Grand Chessboard

This is how they see the world, they're statists. Why the hell would they have a sense of urgency? This is why institutions are more important than people. Entities such as the state only have one goal, and that is to grow. Quickly, slowly, either way. They live longer than any human can. Life is just a number on a spreadsheet or congressional legislation at this point.

This is what happens as a result of specialization. This is what happens as the systems we create grow to giant scales. Emotion has to die out as we go.
