Google is changing the way I work

Besides all the servcies that many of have used at Google, there is now a hosted document and spreadsheet function.

...no need for MSOffice

...no need for a hard drive

...you just create or upload docs and spreadsheets and access them from any computer. a virtual hard drive, free office productivity software with functions like automatic conversion to pdf files, all equals a radical change in the wind.

1. It's Mindblowing
I haven't had a chance to try a tenth of the stuff they're offering now.

2. Don't forget you can have multiple people work on them and share them...
Having multiple people work on the same document - consider having a spreadsheet(s) where multiple people input data - this can be very handy from a business standpoint...

In all fairness, however, it should be noted that while I've had no problems with these apps working for me in Fedora 5.0 Linux, they are both subfeatured and sluggish for their full blown desktop equivalents, even for the free OpenOffice.

9. You do realize the new Office Sharepoint Server allows you
to do this, now, as well.

I'm not touting one or the other - I'm just pointing out Microsoft is aware that people need these solutions and their new Sharepoint Server accomodates this.

12. Microsoft will never be accused of being ahead of the curve

They are very good at bringing their "innovations" to market several years after the true innovaters have introduced their products. The IE is basically Firefox, for example.

MS is the McDonald's of the information processing industry.

5. Do you feel that the information is safe housed on a remote host?
I do see the advantages. But it gives me the willies at the same time. If I had a business I wouldn't want to have the information on a computer connected to the net.

Just wondering why businesses would trust Google with company info? Maybe I'm not understanding how it works.

6. And do not forget everyone else you are giving them to...
Anyone who gains access to Google's computers (such as the US Government), any hacker, anyone listening in to your internet connection, etc., etc. In recent years, the theft of hundreds of thousands of credit card numbers from web service providers has become common, so don't try to say that Google is using a secure HTTP protocol or that no one would ever steal your data.

This might be fine for some things, but you should be extremely careful not to upload anything you don't want to have made public, like bank account numbers, credit card numbers, social security numbers, and so on.

13. I have one basic rule
For anything that I publish to the web, do I want the world to have access to it? When I save something on Google I am assuming that it is public.

8. We have had some issues with formatting and reading
these documents via office.

Keep them simple, not too many graphics or wierd fonts.

11. I am sure they offer a lot but please do not do searches there.
www.goodsearch.com donates money to a charity of your choice every time you search.
