Josh Marshall hints Allen campaign's Webb novel ploy is a decoy
from the question on a lot of investigative journalist's minds and lips: What's under the seal in Allen's divorce papers?

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/week_2006_10_22.php#010616

The Allen campaign refuses to return our calls asking whether Sen. Allen will release his sealed divorce records. We're not the only news outlet asking, just the only one telling you how the Allen campaign is responding. Heck, one major national daily had a reporter out in LA for at least week trying to nail down the story. It's what every Washington insider is talking about: what's inside those sealed records down in Albemarle County. Now that the Allen campaign is about to go on the airwaves about sex scenes in Jim Webb's books, maybe you should know about this too.

6. Here's a rumor from Taegan Goddard's Political Wire:

Emails began pouring in earlier today about a rumor on Capitol Hill about some trouble in Sen. George Allen's (R-VA) divorce file. Josh Marshall and others cannot get a response from the Allen campaign.

It seems everyone is emptying their opposition research files today.

Update: A very reputable political reporter tells me this isn't from Democratic opposition research and that it's probably coming out because many feel Allen "crossed the line" when he started talking about Jim Webb's novels.

I'm told divorce records are usually sealed for two reasons: (a) to protect kids, and (b) to protect large financial fortunes. Neither situation applies in Allen's case, so the suspicion is that it's something not very nice.

Update II: A clue might be in this Ryan Lizza piece on Mark Warner about a story that had been "making the rounds" about a 2008 presidential contender who "once spit on his wife." That rumor was also about Allen.

8. OK, this is secondhand information, but it's
from a reliable source. The guy I'm referencing knew George and the first Mrs. Allen and used to socialize with them during their marriage in the early 80's.

He says George was quite the philanderer and was abusive as well. That's what's in those long sealed docs.

22. Allen's younger sister Jennifer wrote an
Edited on Fri Oct-27-06 03:56 PM by LibDemAlways
autobiography called "Fifth Quarter" back in 2000. In it she recounts growing up in a football obsessed household with three older brothers. George made her life miserable. She recounts how he held her over Niagara Falls on a family trip, hit her boyfriend in the head with a pool cue, dragged her by her hair, threw his brother through a plate glass door, and vandalized people's mailboxes with a baseball bat he kept in his car. Interesting aside: another person who attended Palos Verdes High with George (and me) says George showed a bunch of kids the bat. It had "n----r knocker" written on it and he bragged that he used it to bash heads.

George Allen is a piece of work.

I trust that there are more good/decent people in VA than there are angry, mean, violent, racist, women-hating things!!!

on edit needed to add: 'violent'

32. It's worse: Allen dragged her UP the stairs, by her hair!
From http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2006/08/16/gop-senator-george-allen_n_27382.html :

"GOP Senator George Allen's Sister Documents Her Brother's Bully Tactics: "He Saw Dentistry As A Perfect Profession -Getting Paid To Make People Suffer"...

Huffington Post | Posted August 16, 2006 11:01 AM

Senator George Allen's racial remark to a 20 year old Indian man last week, has re-highlighted accusations that the Senator is a bully and a bigot. Senator Allen's sister, Jennifer Allen, documents many cases of her brother's bullying in her book Fifth Quarter: The Scrimmage of a Football Coach's Daughter. Read the excerpts below.

Referring to George's early leadership skills, Jennifer wrote: "We all obeyed George. If we didn't, we knew he would kill us. Once, when Bruce refused to go to bed, George hurled him through a sliding glass door. Another time, when Gregory refused to go to bed, George tackled him and broke his collarbone. Another time, when I refused to go to bed, George dragged me up the stairs by my hair."

Explaining why she is scared of heights, Ms. Allen writes that "Ever since my brother George held me over the railing at Niagara Falls, I've had a fear of heights." Referring to George's relationship with one of her boyfriends: "My brother George welcomed him by slamming a pool cue against his head."

Referring to George's early career aspirations, Jennifer wrote "George hoped someday to become a dentist. George said he saw dentistry as a perfect profession - getting paid to make people suffer." ..."

21. Then there's the little matter of his votes harming domestic violence victims
2004: Allen Voted Against Expanding The Family And Medical Leave Act To Cover Victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. In 2004, Allen voted against a proposal that would expand the Family and Medical Leave Act to allow victims of domestic violence and sexual assault to take leave from work for up to 30 days. It also would allow victims of domestic violence, stalking or sexual assault to receive unemployment insurance if they have lost their job as a result. The American Association of University Women was for the amendment.

1988: Allen Opposes Rights of Women Sexually Assaulted in the Workplace. Allen voted against legislation to allow a woman who was sexually assaulted in the workplace to sue her attacker rather than be limited to benefits under workers' compensation. He was one of just twenty members of the House who apparently believe that sexual assault in the workplace is just another job hazard.

25. This race is getting curiouser and curiouser.
Reminds me of this in 2004 in Illiinois:

"Five years later, when Jack Ryan's Senate campaign began, the Chicago Tribune newspaper and WLS-TV, the local ABC affiliate, sought to have the records released. Both Jeri and Ryan agreed to make their divorce records public, but not the custody records, claiming that that could be harmful to their son.

On June 22, 2004, the California judge in the case agreed to release the custody files; the decision generated much controversy because it went against both parents' direct request and because it generally reversed the early decision to seal the papers in the best interest of the child. It was revealed that, six years previously, Jeri had accused Jack Ryan of asking her to perform sexual acts with him in public, and in adult clubs in New York, New Orleans, and Paris. Jeri Ryan described one as "a bizarre club with cages, whips and other apparatus hanging from the ceiling." These disclosures led Jack Ryan to withdraw his Republican candidacy for an open United States Senate seat in Illinois."

Courtesty of Wikipedia, emphasis mine.

I just love these Re:puke: hypocrites....

How can Allen's handlers be allowing such nastiness. There is so much suspect about Allen that is going to come out. Kerry didn't fight back enough, imho, when the swiftboaters came out to get him, but we have learned. Allen sure is a moron.

As far as I can tell, the entire Republican party now consists of thieves, perverts, and criminals. They sure are lucky the Religious Right still supports them, since nobody else is blind and clueless enough to go along.

38. This is what happens when you elect jocks to office.
That's about all the Republicans elect to office anymore. Actors and jocks. Living off their name with no credentials to hold an office. George Allen is an example of someone living off his father's fame and he happens to share his first and last name. Same for former Florida senator Connie Mack. These are just two examples.

And they say the Liberals are taken over by the Hollywood types.
