BAGHDAD: A vicious battle between Iraqi police and insurgents north of Baghdad left at least 24 officers, 18 rebels and one civilian dead.

"The police under fire fought back in intense house to house fighting," the US military said.

"Iraqi and coalition forces engaged insurgents with direct fire, killing 18 rebels, wounding eight and capturing 27 more."

Elsewhere, a US soldier died of wounds sustained fighting in Iraq's strife-torn Diyala province north of Baghdad, the US military said, bringing the American death toll for the month to 97.
