"I am fearful when I see people substituting fear for reason—"
The Day the Earth Stood Still was on last night. What a timeless warning for us earthlings.

"Why don't the people in the government do something?" The reply he gets: "They're not people. They're Democrats."

Bobby's attempt to explain his father's death confounds Klaatu, the alien says that he comes from a place where "they don't have any wars." Bobby replies, "Gee! That's a good idea."

All the international "petty squabbling" and "strange, unreasoning attitudes" that Klaatu found so distasteful have proved damn hard to grow out of.

TIME review - Klaatu "is no villainous monster; he is an ultra-civilized being who makes earthmen....look like a monstrous race of Yahoos."

1. Klaatu is ulta-civillized. ? A semiotic for US self-image in the 1950's
or 2006's?

What about that nasty little argument Klaatu makes? Saying in effect--Quit developing weapons that threaten us or we will reduce you to a burned out cinder.

Sorry that's not my vision of where human ultra-civilization ought to be going.

2. And when reason causes us to be fearful for this reason....
our adrenals go into overdrive.

No wonder so much of the population "reasons" away their need to fear, or surrenders to the seductive whispers of a "benevolent big brother" willing to shoulder the buren of the reason for your fear.

Inverse, internallised doublethink really makes my head hurt and vicera roil.

Recursion, rears it's ugly head, and suddenly I have sympathy for the poor freeper.

Not all are inherently evil. They are just faced with a choice between insanities, one born of comfortable fantasty and the other a painful reality.
