Who is the obnoxious female commentator on MSNBC right
now? I don't watch television very often and I know who the major players are, but I have never seen her before. I really don't like the way she's treating Todd Webster.

7. OK - so what is the PC term for someone who isn't white, but doesn't
look black or hispanic either? Or should I describe her without mentioning the color of her skin?

Ignore it.
Someone ALWAYS has to make a statement into a race baiting ordeal. Very phucking childish IMHO. Saying someone is of a "mixed race" is not a racial slur. Some people just don't get it.

and I'm African American.

That tells me that she is probably not the Blonde one that I was thinking of originally.

14. Saying 'mixed' is stupid / ill-informed, not racist
It assumes that white is 'pure', which displays a total lack of understanding of human evolution.

15. How does that assume that white is "pure"?
Mixed is just that- mixed. Any combination of two or more. There's no value judgement inherent in the expression at all.

17. but then have you decided the word "mixed" is negative or something?
in order for there to even be a problem with all this, as silly as this WHOLE thing seems to me, seeing the person worked hard at being pc to not offend (how much more do we want from people) the word mixed, in and of itself can be the most beautiful and bringing to one.... of a word we could possibly have.

we call my family mutt.... and see the diversity adn beauty adn grandness init

i refuse a purebred puppy,.... always lookingfor hte mutt

for me, mixed is much more a compliment and pure a jab

i could go on and on with the deciding on a word being good bad or otherwise

implication that it is anything more or less than any other "race".

19. It seems that you are the one making the value judgement that
white is "pure" - nobody else is. Which is more ill-informed?

So many people here think that merely the mention of a persons race or ethnicity constitutes "racism" which is total bullshit. Why when someone is described as white is that not an issue? It seems there is the assumption on the part of those who cry 'racism" is that THEY believe in the inferiority of those with darker skin, and therefore claim to be offended by any mention of it.

and some that are bi-racial also prefer this term.

Others that have two parents that were both bi-racial prefer the term "mixed" because it's easier than having to try to determine what "box" they fit into.

and the point of many that are of mixed race. They don't appreciate being forced to identify as one thing or the other, or even bi-racial when they may be several ethnicities. :hi:

30. It may be ill informed but not to African Americans

If we were not to use that way of identification, we would be lost.

We come in so many beautiful shades and are "mixed" in so many ways that are identified by the eye.

We may say, " She /He looks Creole or Mixed" and it is not a plus or a minus for that person.

We are simply trying to find out a way to identify them.

So if it's not an insult to African Americans, who is it insulting?

Is it insulting to the person who was called "mixed" because they wanted to be called White?

32. Some that are mixed prefer to be called mixed.
:hi: goclark! Always good to see you!

Personally, I'm all for alleviating the need to "identify" people based on race. I've spent a lifetime of people asking "what are you" because of my olive coloring. It seemed more important to others to need to determine what I was, than it's ever been in my life. In the grand scheme of things does it really matter, what race someone is?

Some that are mixed prefer bi-racial because that is accurate for them. Others prefer mixed because they are a few cultures (both parents are bi-racial, etc.). For some, it's just easier for them to identify with one of their ethnicities or the other--even if it didn't feel an authentic representation of who they are.

I applaud the efforts overall, because I'm hoping for a day when everyone is so mixed up no one can be identified anymore. May not happen in my lifetime, but it's coming.

It's like the terms black, African American, etc.--shouldn't it be up to those that are actually in the position to decide what they prefer to be called?

36. Outstanding Bliss! Love the Forum Link

The world you wish for is the one I wish for ~ wouldn't it be lovely if we didn't have to self identify or have someone try to identify us?

My dear friend has the most darling grandbaby, mother Japanese and father African American.

The baby is ADORABLE!

It should not matter what part of what percent the baby is of what group.

But in America 2006, it still matters. :(

I have a dream that one day.....

38. Hey golark...!
It is my sincere belief that we are all headed in the right direction. I know that a day is coming when no one will be able to identify people or box them--it will be impossible because people will have SO many mixtures within them. There are people like that around now...but people still try to box them. I'm pleased that many mixed race people are fighting that--fighting being put in a box!

Your dream will one day be a reality, my friend.

Unfortunately, with hate groups raising children in their ranks--there will probably always be people around that "fight" this, based on their ignorance and ridiculous ideas of "racial purity." My fervent hope is that one day "we" will outnumber "them" and they will have to crawl back under their rocks. ;)

28. there are no distinct races
just local variations on a single theme.

there are four distinct gene pools in Africa, and one of them is closer to Scandinavians than it is to the other three.

Everyone on the planet is descended from an identified genetic line in Africa.

travel from Africa to south Asia to East Asia and you'll see local variations in various characteristics - but you'll never be able to say "oh the last guy was race A and this guy is race B. You'll just eventually realize most people you see are differnet from the ones you were seeing a few days ago.

The comment "mixed race" was an attempt to describe the person - a weak one, since Tiger Woods is "mixed race", Barack Obama is "mixed race" and George Allen is "mixed race". But it was not meant as a slur. Criticize the vagueness of the comment if you wish, but stick the ad hominem attacks where the sun don't shine.
