Japanese fishing boat
I'm apparently search impaired. I was trying to look up any discussions about the Japanese fishing boat that was toppled by a nuclear sub. Some high school kids were killed.

My question is this: I know that Bushler gave the okay for some of his bidness buddies to go aboard the sub and I heard rumors that these yahoos got to take the wheelhouse and take it for a joy ride. The commander was named Waddel (I think). Did he get a direct order from the Chimp in Chief to allow the presidential pals to run amok in a nuke sub?

I know some kids died because of this. I watched a program about the Greenville which was filmed before this tragedy. Waddel was extremely professional and made a very strong point about how careful they have to be because of surface vessels. He was completely professional.

Does anyone remember how this happened? Did Bushler override the commander?

1. I'm sure they aren't allowed to do a balast blow
or whatever that is with a civilian at the wheel. They probably were in a straight line when someone got to touch the wheel.

7. But a balast blow is what they did
I can't imagine the highly trained Navy personnel doing that under a fishing boat.

16. I think they didn't know it was there
Should they have known before they did it, YES ... but I don't think a Navy Captain is dumb enough to intentionally kill people and possibly damage his own vessel to show off.

3. If I am not mistaken...
I think it was some of the good folks from Enron who were onboard at the time.

5. ok i found this on it
http://www.the-catbird-seat.net/Greeneville.htm

Japan Defense Chief: 'It is outrageous'.

He says the U.S. Navy 'is slack' to let civilians sit at sub controls

i just skimmed, but sounds like it was basically oil men and women, bush supporters, who were given a joyride on the nuclear sub which caused them to collide w. the fishing boat & kill the 9 fishermen

9. Thanks!
I'll look at that right away. A joy ride was the distinct impression I got - not observation, but they were getting their kicks.

11. IIRC, the captain & crew went through the proper procedures,
checking for surface vessels, prior to the "emergency ballast blow" that was to impress the tourists, but somehow the tourists distracted them, delaying the surfacing, and then when they did surface they failed to check again for vessels on the surface. The captain, quite properly, took full responsibility. Apparently several minutes passed between the last sonar check and the maneuver.

13. Oh, I see
The commander did take full responsibility. I couldn't help but feel badly for him. Was he under direct order to take these donors through maneuvers? I understand that some of the crew were trainees. The whole aspect of influence peddling turns my stomach.
